Assuming D0856046 is the original factory stamping (does it look neat or does it look like someone has hand-stamped it?), then there are several VW flat engines that came originally with a 'D' prefix.

'D' was originally a 1200cc 25 kw (40hp SAE) engine, made anywhere from 1965 to 2003, which sounds like your one.
'DF', 'DG', 'DH' and 'DJ' were all 1900cc Type 2 engines from 1983 to 1992 - water-cooled - in various states of tune. That's not yours.

Your chassis number that starts 111 indicates a 1971 Superbug. In Australia they usually came with 'AD' 1600cc engines, which have twin pressure relief valves and twin-port heads. Sounds like yours isn't original, so really it could be anything. Who knows what crank, cylinders or heads it has! Does it have twin-port manifolds? Does it have a dog-house oil cooler?
