'60-'70's racing VW's in Aus
syncro - June 2nd, 2003 at 12:12 PM

I went to Winton race circuit on the weekend to a all historic race meeting, cars from the '20's to the '70's racing, the production sedans from the 60's -'70's are awsome to watch.http://www.htcav.asn.au/Index.html Holden's, Ford's, Mini's, Triumph, BMW, even a Hillman Imp but no VW's !
I know there were a few VW's raced during this period in Australia like , George Reynolds who's Bug was reported, in '62-'63, to have 94 bhp and revved to 7500 rpm and won more than 50 races, Barry Ferguson drove a stock Bug to a class win at Bathurst and George Gesshos who raced a Bug in NSW and had many class wins during the mid to late '60's.

Does any one have any info on any of these or other VW's that raced in Aus. during the 60's-70's mechanical specs or mod's fotos what ever you may have .

I am interested in puting together a VW to compete in this class of historic racing so any info would be helpful.
The historic facts are important as prof needs to be provided that the cars raced with similar mods in the period.

George is still alive, kicking and racing. The last race he won was The 2002 East Coast Classic in class and 7th outright.

I was pit crewing for him at that race.

cool,
is he still racing beetle's? and what class does he run in,do you know what mech set up he was using in the late '60's early '70's, any photos.
There seems to be alot more vw's involved in motor sport in NSW compared to Vic.:(

The guy who used to race Powertune's orange Beetle race car in Sports Sedans in the '70s was Greg Mackie. He also raced Beetles much earlier than that. Until 1973 Bathurst used to host the Easter race meeting where open wheelers, stockers, sports cars, modifieds and specials all raced in different heats. Greg drove a Beetle there in the late 1950s.

Other old VW racers include George Reynolds, Eddie Perkins, Ray Christie, Ern Abbott, Barry Ferguson and Chris Heyer among many others.

See if you can find a book called VWs In Motorsport by Peter Noad. Written and published in the UK in the mid '90s, has a lot of Aussie info in it.

This is a pic from the '85 day of the vw in Melbourne, The car is Shrapnel.
This car was sold to a guy from Parkes, Mark renolds, it was painted red and sold again a few years ago. I have never seen it since.

Hi

I used to help Greg Mackie out at some of his meetings with his red superbug. Greg Mackie started of the company called Macrac, they make the bike racks that fit on your towbar.

From memory, Greg won the under 198? 2 L Wunderluch sport sedan series and came 2nd outright overall. He would have won the series outright but for nasty crash with George Fury, he was not able to collect points for that round. Evan Green who used to hate VWs would always try to talk about something else when Greg was in the lead. Club VeeDub has videos of some of Gregs racers in its library.

Pat Crea was another Beetle racer.

Beetles really did well at Rallycross, even beating Peter Brooks twin rear wheel Monaro.

A few months ago Barry Ferguson came along to Club VeeDub meeting and told us about his racing exlpoits, it was great night.

my dad used to race a drag car in the 70s, it was called impulse and was running 13s then got into the 10s. then had a rail called yoyo, the front just used to pop up and down on the 1/4. it was short wheel based. his tow car was the gypsy van a split window ute with a mid mounted buick v8 in it, he ran that as a joke one day and it pulled a 13. i have pics but no scanner so i cant show you all. but i will ask a couple of friends if they can put them on.
