OK guys, lets ahev a guessing competition.
Found these broken bits of bakelite / hardened rubber / plastic in the bootom of my beetle engine when doing an oil change in preperation for valla.
They loook like some kind of washer or seal & it looks like ther would have been 2 of them. They were sitting in a pile on the sump plate.
What the hell are they?
I have had the car for about 6 yrs, never had the motor apart, never had any big issues, never dropped anythng down the oil filler that I am aware
of. Needless to say I am now a bit nervous.
What do you think.
Cheers
Brendan
Look like valve stem seals...............I wouldn't worry about it.
If you take the rocker covers off, and look at the valve stems through the valve springs you will find that they are missing.
yep, valve stem seals...........there was a thread about these the other day
Looks like diced olives
get worried if you find an anchovy
Thanks guys, I'll have a look when I do the tappets over the weekend. I didnt realise there were valve stem seals on these buggers.
See you at Valla.
Cheers
Brendan
No One uses valve stem oil seals these days..
and i thought they were thinner and longer..
but if your engine is going OK
and they were rubber seals of some sort
i wouldn't be worried..
I hope we all make it to Valla Nambucca heads OK

Have a taste.
If it tastes like an olive but smells like an anchovi,
may not be such a bad thing.

no dramas. Just do a quick rebuild on one of the caravan site slabs. At least you dont have a turbo and shrouds to pull off!
