In 1974 my dad gave me his '72 Championship beetle. It was lovely, I was stupid and I customised it.I still have pics of it in its many guises.

Mid eighties my first one. Can`t recall the year model. Had a tired 1100 until i got a good 1200 into it which in turn ended being tweaked to a 1850,mahlies etc, lightened flywheel, holley, town & country extractors,kyb`s,14" ford mags. Had it retrimmed/carpetted by guy up Lakemba way.Went, and looked better than the sad paint it had.But back then it was just another car.You live to learn.

Dad drove me home from hospital in his Manly Tan '59 Beetle (that he bought new in Parkes) when I was born in '64. He once said that I probably wasn't conceived in it (his back wasn't the best), but you never know. I later learned to drive in it. We had in in our family until '78, when he sold it to the mate of a mate, who wrote it off.

I bought my '64 Beetle in '82, and owned that until it too was written off in 2001. The Kombi came along in 2002. It's still going fine except for the current engine rebuild...

I am over 40 (just) and didn't buy my first VW until November 07 and still haven't even driven it yet. I hope all the work I'm putting in is worth it and I love it as much as everyone else on this site loves their cars. I'm hoping that it will be a life changing experience and I keep it for years, not like the past when I have only had 1 car out of 45 (or more) for longer than 2 years. Having so many cars, I hope these little cars are my calling and I finally settle.

P.S. So does my wife

Hi first drive was my brother-in-laws '59 beetle but bought a '62 1/2 beetle in 1971, the Aussie put-together ones had a bit of a bad reputation then for finish etc and German imported ones were the go! traded that on a '68 1500 and two Kombis after that. Last Camper I regret selling, traded on a Merc. Vito but miss the '74 Camper we had. Had no Dubs for 10 years but saw two for sale in the local rag for $800, couldn't resist so it's started all over again, like Malaria it comes and goes, this forum is a great community! ahh the year was 1997 and I bought a 73 Superbug L. First thing I did was put in tiger seat covers. Second thing I did was remove them.

greasykitchen - August 4th, 2008 at 07:39 PM

First car and first VW was a '72 1300 Beetle bought in 2000 (not long after I got my Ps - I was a late learner). Second car and VW is my current - '76 Golf, bought in 2005. 115,000 kms, 4th owner, same age as me.

Hope to have more one day when I have the money and space (and my years of study pay off). :)

Seems the 40 thing is going around at the moment , i turned the big 40 back in Dec 07 and i believe dangerous is comming up soon too .
Winding the clock back to 1991 we had our first beetle a 62 with a mighty little 1400 in it , I still remember racing cars back from the coast Monza muffler howling etc etc are those were the days

HGFS - August 5th, 2008 at 12:51 AM

First VW was the then girlfriends' 72 Superbug. She probably wishes she never bought it since it got me into VW's, I had a 64 Mini at the time. This must have been in '93.
We lowered it and took it out to a club meet and the first comment was nice car would be good if it was lowered. So down another few inches till there was barely any travel left in the front, come to think of it that's how every beetle has been done since. Good times though met a bunch of great guys (& girls I guess...) who are still in the scene now & still friends.
The Super was hit pretty hard in the back and was written off, but we bought it back, had it fixed and ran around in it again until her belly started expanding so we had to get a more "practical" car.
