It snowed in Wollongong yesterday!

bajachris88 - August 8th, 2008 at 10:05 AM

Global warming is starting to go out the window, no kidding.

People still believe it.

BUT! the investigators and scientific institutes involved are baffled as to some of the weather patterns going on. It doesn't match what was predicted from global warming, nor follow their assumed results and ideals of what today's weather was going to be like. These predictions and what not, being from yrs ago when they first brought up the concept.

Some claim its just the world having somewhat of a climatic cycle that stretches for yrs... rather than a global warming epidemic. Maybe you need to use your car a little more Chris, warm the place back up ;)

amazeer - August 8th, 2008 at 10:08 AM

I was using a terribly inefficient fan heater powered by coal. I guess thats why the snow went away.

cram - August 8th, 2008 at 12:14 PM

it's not global warming - its climate change accelerated by humans.
some paces get warmer, some colder, some more rain, some less.
in any case, increases in extremes of weather will be become more common.

nice pics though!

VWCOOL - August 8th, 2008 at 12:53 PM

It is heat that 'powers' weather, so GW causes an increases in extremes of weather such as snow in the Gong

Anyone who doesn't believe GW is 'real' is an idiot

Tim Andrews - August 8th, 2008 at 01:36 PM

Call me an idiot, but i don't think human existance would even register as a blip on the earths timeline. I think its a little bit short sighted to think that by studying weather patterns over the past, few hundred years, we could possibly predict whats going to happen in another hundred years.
I aslo think that as humans we like to belive that everything revolves around us.
My 2 cents
P.S 'snowbal fight'!

winerot - August 8th, 2008 at 01:50 PM

i have just got out of the surf, nice little 2 to 3 ft waves glassy & no one else around
hmmm same state different weather.

vw54 - August 8th, 2008 at 01:55 PM

is that snow or Hail ?????????

amazeer - August 8th, 2008 at 02:00 PM

in between. It was raining slurpy!

1303Steve - August 8th, 2008 at 02:16 PM

Does anybody want to buy a harbour bridge or tickets to the Olympic opening ceremony?

Phil74Camper - August 8th, 2008 at 03:00 PM

Amazing photos. I have never seen snow outside of Perisher/Smiggins, and I've never seen a decent hail storm either.

Of course climate is changing. Climate has been changing over the whole history of the Earth, some 4.6 billion years. There have been long periods of hot; long periods of cold. There have been times of world-wide ice ages, world-wide deserts, world-wide tropics. Oceans have been 100m lower than now, and 100m higher. There have been periods where life has flourished, and others when life has almost died out. The earth has been hot and wet; cold and wet; hot and dry; cold and dry; and everything in between.

The reasons are many and varied. The sun's output is almost constant but not quite, with many short and long-term cycles laid over one another. Earth's orbit is not circular, nor is it constant. Earth's axial tilt changes. The moon's orbit has changed. The Earth's magnetic field changes, moves, fluctuates and reverses. Continents move, drifting both over and away from the poles. Historically, it is most unusual to have two polar ice caps at once. The Earth is currently moving out of a colder-than-normal scenario when you look at things in terms of, say, the last 1,000,000 years.

The question is whether human activity is having any effect. We have been here such a short time - a bare eyeblink - that it is impossible to say without knowing more about the larger, natural effects. CO2 increased from 270 parts per million to 300 parts per million between 1750 and 1850 (as revealed by ice core measurements), which humans could not have caused. Could there be a natural process for CO2 increase that has been overlooked?

Water vapour contributes up to 70% of the Earth's 'greenhouse' effect (based on abundance and absorbtion of infrared radiation), far more than CO2 or methane. Not much we can do about that !

bajachris88 - August 8th, 2008 at 04:34 PM

put it this way...

we are making CO2 emmissions by burning products of oil (petrol, kero, av gas.. u name it) and coal

OIL and COAL are fossil fuels... formed by hi pressures and temperatures underground on dead flora and fauna material. (leaves, dead dinos... u name it right).

Does that mean than, we are simply returning the CO2 they were living in and we are reviving the original atmosphere the earth had? How could be be destroying the earth from these emmissions if its just returning it to the same state where technology and cars and what not didn't even exist, back to an atmosphere where the time period had more dense flora and fauna thriving happily.

Think about it :smirk:

Notch Nut - August 8th, 2008 at 04:43 PM

The polar caps are receding. Last spotted on Amazeer's front lawn:D

winerot - August 8th, 2008 at 04:47 PM

I sell sunblock, mosquito spray & poison ivy cream if anyone's interested heh heh

Tim Andrews im with you brother

1303Steve - August 8th, 2008 at 07:01 PM

Hi

I'm all for looking after the planet and not making a mess for future generations, but this whole carbon credit thing looks like a good way for some to make money and others to suffer.

Steve

amazeer - August 8th, 2008 at 07:02 PM

Hmm perhaps I should have just titled the thread fuck its cold... which it actually wasnt that cold yesterday, the weekend was much colder. But now that we're here

Because we cant prove one way or another it comes down to who's propaganda you want to listen to. I think there would be far less opposition to the global warming theory if it were the cheaper option.

Regardless of temperature, I know the sky is dirty brown and it would be nicer without that. I know that there isnt brown stuff in the country but the bigger the city the more brown stuff is there in the air. Based on those facts I have a theory that people cause brown stuff. I know that the population is rising and therefore emissions of brown stuff are increasing. Everybody who likes smog, put their hand up now!

I know that allergies and asthma and cancers are on the rise. I also know that when I was a kid I could spend all day at the beach without getting sunburnt. I can only remember one time in my childhood getting sunburnt and that was when mum took us to the snow for the first time and didnt think it would be hot enough to get burnt! And now I get a little burnt after watching my daughter play netball for 1 hour. Thats what has happened over the last 30 years, That trend continued, you wont be able to go outside for 5 minutes by the time I'm ready to retire.

The world is getting hotter, nobody denies that. Its just the cause that is up for debate. You can sit around till the cows come home, already microwaved just slice them up and serve and tell anyone its not your fault and have a happy conscience. Or you can attempt to try and at least slow it down just in case it IS your fault. Maybe it IS our fault but it isnt proven yet... thalidomide, asbestos, lead, dalcon shield... all good things until proven otherwise.

If you are arrogant enough to think that some things arent absolute and no way no how it can be carbon related, and no matter what you burn the world is still going to heat up, surely it would be better and healthier to let it heat up with cleaner air. Would you not want to reduce smog if you could? Well you know you can.

amazeer - August 8th, 2008 at 07:08 PM

I dont fully agree with carbon credits. I cant see how letting the big polluters pollute if the give money to non polluters does anything for the environment. I think it would be more useful if the big polluters were made to spend the money on pollution reduction.

Does anyone think that the smog reduction measures in Beijing are shite? I cant believe 17 million people are living there every day of their lives in that smog, and then a couple of thousand sports people go there and demand clean air so that they can run fast. So they effectively shut the whole place down! If it isnt Olympics related, its closed!

1303Steve - August 8th, 2008 at 07:27 PM

Hi

Plenty of blue sky in my part of Sydney. You only need to look to the middle ages to see that things have been warmer in the past, the Romans grew grapes in Britain and how do you think Greenland got its name.

Steve

Kevin 07 will save us.
What a crock of shit he wouldnt know his arse from his elbow on this.

Flintstones - August 8th, 2008 at 09:02 PM

These pollies and greenies must think the population are stupid to believe this GW nonsense.
It's just another propaganda scam for the Gov to make money on.

Honestly when Kev and the other clowns came up with the idea of this carbon crap scam and that it would cost $5 Billion (which we'd have to pay for) surely for the money that's been considered, it could have been spent on creating better infrastructure for creating greener power etc.....

Cheers

 I thought the same...... green's so-oo last season anyway.. This seasons hottest trend is purple...... make a bold statement and impress your friends by being part of the 'In' crowd.......purplepower is HOT, Green is NOT....Carbon trading is no longer considered cool either, it's yu-gi-oh swapcard revival month in the playground, that and coloured rubber bands,, swap them, stretch them, flick them...hours of fun for kids of all ages.....Scientists have confirmed rubber bands in fact reduce cancer by up to 75.8%........How do we know this is true? Because ACA says so...:ninja: :dork:

11CAB - August 8th, 2008 at 10:01 PM

Global warming is just another beat up like the Y2K bug was.....everyone has to spend up big to stop the world collapsing due the to Y2K bug.....fizzled out when the clocks turned over and nothing happened....

No but using it as an excuse for more taxes, pretending to help the environment is just a crock
