baja burley - September 21st, 2008 at 06:37 PM

what sort of aftermarket carbies would i be looking at for my stocko 1600? twins? what sort of hp change will i get?... what will it do to my fuel consumption?... all that jargon... any info or help would be appreciated
cheers

for a 1600 tp i would go for a set of cadrons with an exhaust upgrade to extractors not sure of hp gain but it go go better and as for fuel usage should not be excessive it will depend on your driving flatout a lot of fuel safe good fuel
good luck

40mm dellorto's or webers. fit smaller venturi's and adjust jetting to suit your engine. Add a quality exhaust system for more efficiency.

Kadrons. A second-hand set is cheap and cheerful and with a 009 distributor and a set of cheapie extractors, will make it more lively

baja burley - September 21st, 2008 at 09:14 PM

know where i can get all off this stuff without goin to the big boys and gettin ripped off???

VWCOOL - September 22nd, 2008 at 09:12 AM

Maybe try a 'Wanted To Buy'...

baja burley - September 22nd, 2008 at 04:40 PM

i am thinking of a centre mount, single or double barrell 36-40mm progressive carb... i am plannig to do some mild offraoding... hows this for an option?? am i on the right track?? and how much would i be looking at for a carbie of this calibur??? and does anyone have a ballpark figure on horsepower gain for this carbie??

baja burley - September 23rd, 2008 at 10:14 AM

are you going to set up and jet this yourself or are you wanting a drive in drive out

Craig Torrens - September 23rd, 2008 at 12:15 PM

i sold my last complete one for 350, that was ready to fit

baja burley - September 23rd, 2008 at 07:58 PM

a bolt up and drive away one would be nice but i can set it up if i have too....
really!?! - only 3-4 hp?? i thoght it would be more than that.

Craig Torrens - September 24th, 2008 at 01:04 AM

5-10% gain in power..............remember a 1600 isn't pumping out big HP !! With the Kadrons you will feel a lot more torque, so it will feel like it has added a lot more HP... Just make sure you upgrade the exhaust as well.

baja burley - September 24th, 2008 at 11:42 AM

so kadrons is the go if im gonna do some offroading??

baja burley - September 24th, 2008 at 11:48 AM

i have been looking at exausts to upgrade and have found a few decent ones but what is the difference between headers and extractors and which is better??

Stanley - September 24th, 2008 at 12:05 PM

Thunderbird extractors a pretty good and you can chose the style of muffler. Is it a baja?

even second hand, kadrons are not cheap anymore. :fakesniff:

baja burley - September 24th, 2008 at 12:40 PM

yeh its a baja super in the making... see how it goes....
so extractors and headers are the same thing??
some fella has a pair of 32/36 webers for 100 bux, no manifolds are they worth it??

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE - September 24th, 2008 at 12:58 PM

progressive linkage 32/36 weber would work well. All you need to get is the right manifold.

pete wood - September 24th, 2008 at 01:18 PM

I had a thought, I could be dreaming, but what about a drawthrough turbo setup. Probably cost about the same cash as a kadrons, manifolds and linkage and would make for a bigger torque/power increase. You'd have to be careful about overboosting it, but premium unleaded would help.

What do you think stanley?

Bizarre - September 24th, 2008 at 01:30 PM

Thought centre mounts were the go for baja's and buggies??

great idea...there is precedence somewhere for that...
Also just realised i replied to the wrong post. Thats what happens when you're trying to hide your internet use at work.

baja burley - September 24th, 2008 at 01:42 PM

i havn't even got my licence yet so a turbo is off the cards (stupid P plate laws)...
does anyone know the specific manifolds i need and pricing?
and are the webers worth it???

pete wood - September 24th, 2008 at 01:51 PM

where abouts are you? If you are in NSW, your motor can't be modded on P plates anyway.

baja burley - September 24th, 2008 at 02:05 PM

im in QLD

matberry - September 24th, 2008 at 02:32 PM

The progressives will work but only as a single, unless you do some interesting engineering.

barls - September 24th, 2008 at 02:35 PM

there use to be a manifold set for a twin set up with the progresives but it hasnt been made for about 10 years, ive only seen 1 set and thats on twoguns split. here is the manifold that you need for the single mount

and here is the whole set up

baja burley - September 24th, 2008 at 03:47 PM

will the stock manifold work if its just a centremount??

pete wood - September 24th, 2008 at 04:56 PM

Yes, you use the stock end manifolds and the centre mount manifold then goes straight into them. BTW, a word of warning, the EMPI brand has had negative things said about the quality of the it's weber reproductions. If you can, I think you might find a rebuilt italian or spanish 2nd handie might be better than a brand new chinese EMPI. I may be wrong on this, but everything I'm hearing from experienced carb users in the states says EMPI stuff is not great. This is added to the colourful reputation the progressive has on VWs. I've personally heard great things about the use of weber progressives on subarus, old peugeots and escorts, so I can't see why VWs engines would be any different, but there you go.

Your other alternative is to try and find a set of cheap 36idfs like I did. They were on Alfa 33s. These are great little carbs and would be well suited for an offroad 1600.
