ok, i need to talk with Arron with the black kombi
TheMiniMan - October 9th, 2008 at 11:39 AM

I`ve just spat another gearbox this morning, :-( i`m in the middle of fitting the new Albins gear-d 2l case with lockrite diff into the zombi right now,,, but i`m thinking that i will need a chat with Arron about his porsche gearbox to see what he thinks of his & how much work/money it is to fit the same set up into mine... i don`t know how long the Albins gears will last, they`re all brand new & still hasn`t truned a wheel yet, should be finished by this arvo tho,,, i`m obviously hopeing they`ll last more than a month like the last few boxes, but i`m pretty sure i would like to set it all up with 4x4 porsche box & syncro front diff & all albins gears & slippery diff with a ratio to suit my wheels/tyre sizes

so,,, can anyone lead me in the direction of Arron with the wheel-standing black combi that ran at Valla & warwick please?

cheers & thanks in advance

he was telling me he runs a G65 so start looking but I hope you have deep pockets. If you decide to sell any of the Albins stuff drop me a line :)

Dangerous has his details.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE - October 9th, 2008 at 06:07 PM

Even the G65 can't cope with the HP of Aaron's car. Case is flexing and starting to leak at the output flanges. By the end of Warwick he had a lot of backlash hence he didn't run the finals.

ok, thanks guys, i`ll have a chat with dave & i`m surer i`ll be talking with Arron shortly

I have the new Albins box in the car now , & with lockrite diff & all running & it seems sweet,,, i`m crossing my fingers that i`ll get at least a few months out of it :-) & there is a pile of people interested & waiting for me to sell this Albins kitted box, so take a number & stand in line :-) I`ll suss out the porsche box option right away tho, & i`ll be taking it easy with this box to make it last till i`ve got something decent, no more wheel stands etc for me for a long while now,,, 5 boxes in 7 months is enough for me :-(

Hi

VForce in Sydney had a 930 box on Ebay, I don't think it sold. Not sure it will be any cheaper and it has very tall ratios but might be worth a look.

e-mail reply from an enquiry i made to a firm in USA about the price & avaliability of a "Decent" porsche box for my Zombi

here`s what they said-->

Dear Matt,

Thank you for contacting us. I feel the most bullet proof Porsche AWD gearbox with direct drive from the pinion shaft would be the 6 speed gearbox from the Porsche 996 Twin Turbo. At the moment we only offer factory reman transaxles for this car at the following prices, delivered to my door:

-996 Turbo standard $10,180
-996 Turbo x50 with improved gearing to my understanding $10,810
-996 Turbo x75 with improved gearing to my understanding and LSD $12,132

Any additional preparation to the transaxles from there would be additional to the cost.

These transaxles used a viscous coupler at the front diff; that is why it's direct drive.

Earlier model turbo AWD 6 speed transaxles had the viscous coupler splined right to the pinion shaft in a separate housing.

Shipping to Australia I estimate at $500-$750.

Please let me know if you have any questions at all.

Cheers,
Roger Brown

welll,,, anyone want to lend me about $25K ?????
:-)

Hi

Have you called Performance 9 in Melbourne for a price? I bought my G50 from them.

Steve

TheMiniMan - October 13th, 2008 at 10:06 PM

1303steve,,, no not yet, i have just got off the phone with Aaron (of Black wheelstanding 20B turbo kombi fame) & had a good long chat,,, i`ll be checking out a whole pile of options shortly & i`ll make decision in a few months as to what i will do... for now tho, the complete Albins gear kit & lockrite diff is in my Zombi & working well,,, for now... so fingers crossed i`ll get a few months out of it which should give me enough time to source a porsche 4x4 box & start the conversion... i`m actually working hard to finish one of my twin cam turbo injected minis right now which i will be able to use while the Zombi goes under the knife/gas axe for the porsche box conversion
wish me luck :-)

& i must say,,, what a nice fella Aaron is, very helpfull & very in-tune , cheers mate if you read this, & thanks heaps.

570 something HP at the wheels on 12psi. Tried for more but turbo needs to be bigger which is something may be replaced for next year perhaps?? As for the gearbox.... well it's showing some signs of strain too......

TheMiniMan - October 15th, 2008 at 12:47 AM

Bizzar,,, Yeah, that one is on my watch list :-) if "the other half" diddnt winge & wine so much about the bucks it would already be under my house :-)

Brenden, yeah i`m envious in one sense but also glad i havn`t got that much grunt (yet) :-)

Matty, when are you commin over for a drinky/BBQ & gork & tork shit?

matberry - October 15th, 2008 at 07:22 AM

Good question Matt R...
In Bris today, might phone if I finish job eary enough.

pete wood - October 15th, 2008 at 07:59 AM

is it worth looking into a porsche auto box to try and lower the impact on the box via the torque converter?

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE - October 15th, 2008 at 12:46 PM

I think the gearing with the bigger wheels would then become an issue for the torque convertor.

TheMiniMan - October 15th, 2008 at 05:01 PM

I`m going out with my girl tonight Matty & then hitting Byron for the next few days, back sat arvo, i`ll be going over to Aarons place to gork & talk about his porsche box & rear suspension maybe sat arvo tho if you`re keen for a get together yeah? you live miles away tho hey? anyways, see what you can do for sat arvo or sunday & we can sort something sometime

& Pete, as much as it`s a dam sensible idea -->no, i`m not an "Auto-spastic" fan really,,, i know they`re good when set up correctly but i really do like having the control of the gears myself :-) & besides that, if i ever do have a flat battery (x2) then i can still clutch it if i have to.

I just spat the right hand outer CV joint yesterday arvo down at Daves Motorsport workshop at slacks creek, so i ripped the whole axle out & drove home on the left axle,,, I love that lockrite diff :-)
Just finished shoving a new CV in there today & also set up a complete spare axle & CV assy, cleaned, greased, assembled & sealed/wrapped up & stuck in the kombi as a spare :-) Ah the memorys of the good old days with my old splitty V8 ute doing exactly this all over again. :-)

It`s obviously Time for the Porsche CVs & axles again hey??? :-) the pain all just keeps transfering to the next weak bit,,, & on it goes again till it`s all been bullet proofed :-)

Control, interesting word. Assumes you have some "self control".

What about a tiptronic? You still get to shift but the torque converter can at least try to stop you destroying the trans.

TheMiniMan - October 15th, 2008 at 05:22 PM

Now Pete,,, stop being so sensible, I`m not hearing you, hands covering ears & "Blah Blah Blah Blah, :-) all i`m hearing is Manual Bulletproof Albins $28 thousand dollar 6 speed doggyTransaxle assy for christmas :-)

pete wood - October 15th, 2008 at 05:33 PM

you could do "R&D" for Albins...Reckless and Dangerous that is.
