Hi all, just wanting to know what i can do to my 71 superbug to lower and make it look good.
eg: so it's not doing a mono.
i have 14 x 6" wheels on it now with a 195/75/R14 tyre
if i lower now the tyre will hit the guard.
What would do the trick ???
Also im having a splutter broblem under load while driving.
anyone got any ideas.
What wheels are you running at the moment?
Take a look at your sparkplugs to see what they are like.
Simon
Vforce sell a really nice 15x6 inch alloy that fits strut front bugs. The profile on your current tyres is also very tall, so you'd probably want to go with a 60 series or something similar. Give Richard a call at Vforce and he can tell what works. Or do a search and look at Bizarre's Lbug. It's got these rims on it.
when you lower it be careful as I have seen a couple lately where the bottom ball joint nut &/or pin hit the inside of the rim ,particularly when turning hard. I suggest 30mm The ones gouging the rims have been 50mm. The plugs or accelerator pump will give you a stutter. Les
for superbugs best thing u do for the front is get adjustable struts
may seem extreme but buy once, cry once
that gives u total flexibilty to play with ur ride height if its half an inch to low, one up notch piece of piss
wide stockies with wrong offset on superbugs was classic 80s tradgedy
not much u can really do about it but get some stock rims
unfortunatly on struts beetles to get 6" under the gaurd enough to no interfere with the gaurd causes it to then interfere with the spring unless u
get narrow coil struts
where are you
pic of wheels and car have been uploaded
im in seaford...
melbourne
dunno what ROH were thinking when they cast good ol hotwires with such a shitty offset
the offset doesnt suit any beetle especialy supers if u wanna lower so if u stick with those rims u will never be able to go too low but a 1-1.5"
drop would work ok
re ur spluttering under load check that the fuel is getting from tank to carb ok
ie no kinks in hoses, block filter or dodgy pump
the $64,000 VW question, when were ur hoses last replaced?
V Force spiders will still require narrowed springed struts
Once you have these (or similar) struts a whole world of wheels open up to you
Personally if you are short on $$$ get the struts on stock wheels - looks HEAPS better than the wrong wheels on stock struts.
You "can" get hour glass springs - but by the time you lower the perch for the spring and get new inserts propper lowered fully ajustable struts are
resonably priced
Maths:
Wheel diameter 14" = 355.6mm, tyre @ 195/75 = 195mm width and 75% of that as sidewall height so 146.25mm sidewall radius (x2) = Overall rolling
diameter of your current setup as 355.6mm + 292.5mm, = 648.1mm
By changing to 185/60 on the front you would change the overall rolling diameter to 577.6mm, and that change of the sidewall height from 146.25 to
111mm will effectively lower the front of the car by 35mm or almost 1 and a half inches. Figure out how much drop you want and see if just changing
tyres will get you there.
185/65 = SW 120.25mm so 26mm or 1 inch drop.
195/60 = SW 117mm so almost 30mm or 1.2 inch drop.
Remember, this will increase the distance between guard lip and tyre as well as "lowering" the front end.
Or stick three bags of cement in the boot LOL!
well that was an option.. lol
hey i have the same question but with a 69 standard! how low can u go with 17" Pourche Cup-3 Rims. i think their 7.5 front and 9 rear? will i need a narrowed front beam also? or will just a lowerd beam work?
narrow beam
otherwise u will have the turning cirlcle of a mack truck and wont be able to get to low without gaurd interference
gahhhhhhhhhhh how much does it need to be narrowed?
most of the guys on germanlook go 2-3"
sigh im hard nub... define germanlook?
and from what iv gatherd. if i want me beetle very lowerd, im going to have to narrow the front end by 3" to fit 7" rims in the front? will i need
to do anything to the rear to fit 9"?
EDIT:
nvm i kno what german look is! im going for like a half german look
sorry i meant guys on the GL forums
http://www.germanlook.com/Forums/
And so it goes on I hate to say it but one of the cars that I saw gouging the rims was wearing hot wires.another was using the narrow springs shown in Bizzarre's pic. So again I say 30-35mm best of luck Les
Jellybeen offset isnt much better
Simon
all the old ROH classics jellybeans, hotwires, globes, hurricanes etc were et15
dunno what they figured that was usefull for cos it sure as shit isnt the 4 stud vws they were made for....
i want my car to sit as low as yours Joel... is what you first said what you did??
yep im running adjustable struts but with narrow coils for wide wheel clearance
its still got another 1" it can go down from this height
i ran it that low for a bit but the sway bar was only 47mm off the road so speedbumps were fun and the cops gave me hell
if u go lower than 2" from stock be sure to get a bumpsteer kit
im hoping to pull the bum down 1 spline this weekend to match the front
screw the exhuast this time
nuzo im using drop spindles from vintage vee dub with standard wheels running 135 on front
nice, but im needing to kno whats required to fit 7.5" front cup-3's under the front gaurds.
im guessing since stock is 5" that a narrowed beam is also required so it fits under the gaurds while lowerd.
and i want it very very low. so im going to have to get some more advise from my mech and ill have a talk to t.he boys at VVD
If the only reason your wanting the 7.5inch rims on the front is for handling, your wasting your time if your going to narrow the beam.
Simon
thanks for all your help guys...
it's helped me heaps..
Cheers
not really for handeling... i jsut really want these rims.... the Cup 3's off a 944 turbo .... ugh i love them so much!!
