Gwendolyn is likely to be getting new webers in a few weeks, and I was thinking of chucking in a a tacho and oil temp gauge whilst at it. Was wanting
to put it low on the dash (as per the photo below of someones super from the 2008 nats, apologies if it's yours), and was wondering if (and where) I
could find square gauges to fit nicely.
Also:
* anything special I should know about gauges for VWs?
* Any other gauges I should think about?
and one last thing, I need to replace the steering wheel, and am trying to decide between staying with a big tiller, or getting a smaller wheel. Super
owners, does the smaller steering wheel get in the way of the speedo?? (I drive past speed cameras and school zones all the time).
Thanks for your help.
Craig
pretty sure u can't, the only way u can do it is like this
http://www.skydrive.co.uk/sd_ei_ta.asp
a square surround with a normal dial..
steff..................
Yep - smaller wheel gets in the way of the speedo big time
Steve C has chopped up a speedo and put a digital read out in one to get around the problem
Also be careful - L bugs came with large and small pline steering shafts
What year is yours??
I kind of thought I'd be pushing it uphill to find square gauges. I'd rather go round then a semi-round/semi-square number
Mine is a 74L, so would that be large or small pline steering shaft? I've been trying to figure out how much I like looking at the speedo and whether
the smaller steering wheel actually offers any advantages, or whether the big wheel is just fine.
have a look at this site i rather like the black face untill key turned on

74 is the change over period
Could be either - my guess is it would be the later smaller one
every 74 ive owned or come accross has all had the taped later water cooled small splines but it pays to check
most Lbug owners like myself, steve carter etc just make a whole new switch panel out of aluminum to fit in extra gauges
i run a 350mm momo wheel and can still see the speedo fine but i run seats that are lower than stock which helps
If your seats are lower in the beetle you'll be able to wear your top hat while driving . Seats are an issue that is on my 'to do in the next six months' list, which (as per this afternoon's count)
extends to 15 items.
Because I don't (currently) have plans for a turbo/supercharger or anything quite that serious I'll stick with putting stuff in the existing dash. I
suspect that means removing the dash, which I believe is akin to the seventh circle of hell.
Sadly this still leaves me undecided on the small vs standard steering wheel size.
u dont need a crazy engine to warrant a decent gauge panel
whilst atm i have...... to many gauges when i had a stock 1600 i made one just with oil temp and oil pressure
invaluble items in any aircooled VW as far as im concerned
ive got my original un hacked plastic switch panel stashed away
dash removal isnt hard
getting it back in is abit harder
my dash removal is pinned on SBO interior forum
