Does anyone know where it would be possible to get the original (or at least a replacement of some sort) woodgrain dash covering for a late model cab in RHD. I've tried posting on Volkszone but have had no replies. I really think getting a pre-cut original would be preferable to trying to get one made. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If you can get a template any reasonable carpenter could knock one up for you and in the species of timber you select, probably best if you could supply the original to use as a template, I did one years ago for a Fiat and it wasn't real hard at all. Found it best to finish it with 2 pack polyurethane, that was just about the only finish I found that would stand up to the heat in a closed up car.
The original is a stick on vinyl, virtually no chance of finding an original kit and I don't think there are any repros being made as most people
paint the dash.
The best substitute I have seen was a hand painted dash with wood grain effect. You can also get stick on vinyl with a wood grain pattern ( ? from a
home decorator / craft store.... but it does looks like the old 1970's fake timber panelling ).
Barry u can get nice woodgrain styling films on ebay
i was gonna do mine in it but went carbon fibre instead
turns out nice
If it's a stick on vinyl and you realy want real woodgrain get some timber veneer, it comes about 1/2 mm thick and you can fix it onto the metal dash with epoxy glue probably need a vacuum press for it but that can be easily made from a large plastic bag and a vacuum cleaner, simple as.
are you talking for an "L"?
There is some one that ebays tha has wood grain vinly for mustangs, KGs, my gran mother etc etc
I bougt an original Empi LHD kit and it was 5 out of 10 for stickiness
It's for the cab in my avatar and as it's a LHD to RHD conversion the original disappeared about 7 years ago when it was done. Also being a curved windscreen dub painting is not an option.Hey Joel carbon fibre would look nice but I want to keep it looking as original as I can but then again if you could post a pic I suppose I could be persuaded to change my mind.
theres already 300million pics of it around the place but here goes
u dont have to go carbon fibre tho, the same finish is availble in lots of nice different woodgrain finshes
i was gonna go dark mahogany but carbon fibre kinda fitted in better with the rest of the car
just get a stock Lbug switch panel and stick the styling film over it
thats all cabs had stock from memory
Hey Joel,
That roll of imitation woodgrain I seem to remember it being sold in the UK in the 70's but where can it be purchased now and do you know if they do
different styles? Even better, what's their website address BTW
love the way you've done the speedo to match the rest!!
