G'Day
stretch - November 9th, 2008 at 05:42 PM

Hi all,
Just got my VW Beetle home from the father in-laws and now I need to know how to find out what year it was made so I can look for parts.
I think it has a 1200cc engine and it has 5 stud wheel hubs, if this helps. It will require alot of TLC and money, I guess, but I hope that I will be up to the challenge.
It was last on the rode in 1988 so there seems to be alot of stuff that will need work.
I'm in Newwy NSW, so if there are members around please drop me a note or three.

Cheers

The_Bug67,
I only got it home today but the engine is seazed, the paint is stuffed, and the inside needs it all.

So I have alot of work in front of me but any way, it should be fun.

I think that May 2010 may be more on the cards but only time will tell.

Thanks for the info though, my sons and I will try. Maybe we can take the VW mascot off the car if its not going by then?

Ha ha ha

hi , someome on on the forum was reecently giving away some reasonably nice looking seats and other parts , read it regularly and u will find some good stuff at reasonable prices

stretch - November 9th, 2008 at 07:26 PM

So it should be an early 64 model, so what are things I should be looking for, good and bad.

I was told that it was a 6 volt system so what are the prose and cons for that.

Can I get the engine un seezed or do I just get a new one?

Are parts rederly available?

Is this just a waiste of time and money?

Just a few questions that I need answers for to tell the wife it is ok and I will be able to fix it up for a reasonable price.

Great to be here

cheers all

G'day to you too, I'm from Newie myself and work in the Terrace, I'm certainly no expert but would like to see what you have, if I can be of any help (highly unlikely) give me a yell.

Stretch' welcome to the VW fold, there are many versions of seized, most of them major and I think if the car has been off the road since 1988 possibly the reason it was parked is the engine problem. this can be as simple as buying a good secondhand motor or a major rebuild. If I was replacing the motor I would suggest a 1600 as good 1200's quite scarce and the extra power makes the little bug a pleasure to drive.(If you use the 1600 just make sure that you use the correct flywheel for the 6 or 12 volt system) I have found no great problems with the standard 6 volt system.I find that there are more parts readily available now than there was 20 years ago and with assistance from the people on this forum there is not much than can't be achieved. I couldn't really advise on whether it is a waste of money because I don't know the vehicle or your circumstances,in most cases you have to set yourself a budget and work to this, otherwise you will become like the rest of us vw nutters and could even have threats of sleeping outside which can become quite daunting in winter (even in Newcastle) Cheers Les

Hey tony from the chassis number 116417..it is more than likely a dec65 to july66 engine number should start with F and be 1300cc.
Didn't look too bad from the bits i saw like the 80's paint scheme oldscool cal looker would have be sweet in its day .

Regards Marty.
