has anyone seen one of these mutations?
I have recently pulled a couple of pix from the net but cant find a website with one on it...
for anyone who does know what the hell I'm on about, it is possible to put a 1948/50 style ford anglia or prefect body on a bug pan and hide the
engine in the boot! the prefects are easier as the wheel base is also indenticle. I have just started one its a 1950 Aussie body Prefect and the best
thing is i can register it as a rebodied vw.
sounds like a very good project as anything can be done it's only the desire to do it
Indian used to have one on there site. Looked good. had a toyota 4age motor in it.
I saw that at a hotrod show at the Ettamogah Pub a few years ago. The builder/owner was a german guy and he told me he'd done it because when he made measurements he realised a VW pan was very close to be able to fit so he done it that way. To me as much as I love my VWs I must admit it seemed a shame as it then was more or less a sort of kit car rather than a rod and though it looked good and was well built, on a car like a pop the engine really does need to be upfront. I've also got photos from years ago when a guy in England done much the same thing with a chevy 3(or is it 5?) window coupe, it just ain't right. In my opinion anyway. Just seen Petes' post and the one I saw had a VW engine in the back.
everyone is entitled to there opinion and to be honest my Prefect started out as a front engined conventional rod.... but hell who wants to be conventional? if we all were conventional there wouldnt be manx buggies and alike and besides have you tried to get a hot engineered these days????? as I mentioned I can register this car as a rebodied beetle! and as for kit car hmmmmmm you maybe on to something might have see my fibreglass buddy when its done! SERIOUSLY KIT CAR come around to my garage one night and see the work involved, its a simple concept but thats where it ends......do you think a ford body bolts straight onto a vw pan........
go for it I reckon it'll be a ripper,we started fitting a flathead V8 in one of those old Anglia rag tops a lot of years ago but hormones took over and the poor old Anglia didn't quite make the distance. We eventually sold it to a bloke for restoration. I'd like to see the progress on the forum. cheers les
If you read my post again you'll see that the guy who built it said "when he measured it it was close" not exact. And no I wouldn't do it but if
you do good luck to you and if you were to make a fibreglass mould from the finished article then maybe I would seriously think about it then I could register it as a kitcar. It is just my opinion though, but a pop
on a proper chassis running a small V8 to a Jag rear axle is just one of my dream cars.
your dead right and i have seen what the german dude did to his back gaurds to make up the short fall and to be honest that looked a little naff...
but still a nice car. FYI and all reading this an anglia wheelbase is 4 inches/100mm shorter than my Aussie body prefect and an aussie ( im sure the
pom version is the same ) body prefect is only 12.5mm shorter than a beetle thats 6.25mm to hide at each end of the car! who's gonna notice that?
I hope to have the body mounted around xmas or just after so i'll post some pix.
as for the kit......well you got me thinking!
If your wondering why im stressing AUSSIE BODY have a look at these pix.. the oz body is more or less a 4 door anglia where the pommy version has that
aweful flat back and boxy front.........
I think with the Anglia, Popular and Prefect the differences were the back i.e. whether or not they had the spare wheel moulding and the front grill either being one or two . I'm not 100% sure as it's a few years since I've really had a good look at one. I do have some old photos from rodruns in the UK though...somewhere. BTW I couldn't click on that link.
