Importing from the UK
pottierm - December 11th, 2008 at 10:37 PM

Hello All, Don't know if anyone out there is cyberthingy has some background knowledge of importing VW Bays from the Uk to Sydney. I have just moved to Sydney on a four year relocation but we had to leave our much loved 1967 Bay tin top at home. Now that we are here we are wondering if its easy to import such an old vehicle into Oz. We have a shipping quote but don't really know if the van will meet the Oz road reglatory requirements, maybe even get turned away once it arrives. The van has had some major work over the years. Its up for sale in the UK but if we can get it here we will.

We understand the VIM approval process but whay else could trip us up.

Any feedback on importing would be appreciated.

Many Thanks

Hi Mark,

If the value of the vehicle is GBP15,000 (AUD32,000) plus the cost of shipping, insurance, port charges, fuel levies, customs, GST (10% of the value of the vehicle and any handling charges) and registration/roadworthy. By the time it gets here you could have bought a lovely split window! Have a look around at what you can buy here in Oz.

Cheers Dave

I'm only guessing, but I don't think You would have any worries with a 1967 vehicle

the vehicle should comply with Australian rules dating back then..

I have seen beetles that have been imported from the uK
South Africa , Japan , USA etc...

all road registered...
