The tyres on my rims, although near new, they "shrunk" from sitting in the shed for few years so there is a big gap between the rim and the beads & they won't hold air. Tried the Tyre Factory and Beaurepairs but they are no longer selling tubes, apparently been outlawed. Where do I get them from in Melb?

Yeah, don't see why would they be outlawed, in fact if anything, they make tyres safer

thats why i was thinking it was odd , as you can get em in NSW and the tyre guy wants you to use tubes in the older cars .

Firstly - tubes are like safety glass windscreens
and they are now illegal - when a stone hits them -
the windscreen shatters and you cannot see where you are going... If You are travelling fast - the glass goes all over you... cutting Your face and head ...
remember every car had this type of windscreen years ago
most beetles also had them - Mine is on My shed roof... lol

Secondly - Tubes are dangerous... When a nail etc punches a small hole in a tube... it blows just like a pin in a balloon... the tyre goes down INSTANTLY - and if its an old tyre - it will split and maybe fall to pieces...

If You are travelling at speed - and a front tyre blows -
chances are You will end up off the road...
which happened to me last time i had a tube in a tyre.
but back before tubeless tyres , every car had tubes...

oddly enough, When I put New tyres on My chromed rims
there were tubes in the tyres..??

I think it may have been law years ago - to use tubes in retreaded tyres...

I think you will find that safety glass was fitted to vehicles prior to laminated screens,when the stone hit the glass there was a section in front of the driver that was a larger section even though the screen shattered,it was possible to drive with the glass intact until it could be replaced. ( depending on the size of the stone /rock/brick) which shattered the screen .i have fitted a lot of windscreens over the years and can not recall anywhere that states that safety glass is illegal.Just think of the recalls that would be required.Obviously when a screen is replaced these days it is replaced with a laminated glass.As for tubes being illegal I have not heard or seen anything to support this during my years in the trade. cheers Les

Yes, in later years they had a safety zone You could sort of see thru just in front of the driver...

All the windscreens that broke while i was driving covered Me in glass,,, and in one accident I actually went thru the windscreen...
I was picking glass out of My head for YEARS...


I checked somewhere before My car was on the road and it said that tempered safety glass was illegal for windscreens... it had to be Laminated glass unless it wasn't available...

this was getting a blue slip for My car which hadn't been registered for 10 years..
I doubt if many mechanics look at the windscreen etc...

Back to the Tyres...
I have NEVER heard of tyres shrinking...
just how old are those tyres..???

Maybe not what your looking for but there is an American product called Slime that you can get from Mitre 10, it seals punctures etc but is not good for high speed as it puts the tyres out of round.

old crossply tyers must use tubes so any old car club should be able to steer you in the right direction i had them in my spoked wheels because they would leak maybe

I agree that the older windscreens may now be unable to be supplied, but that doesn't make it illegal to still have them, only to fit them in place of one that has broken.
I doubt that tyre/tire (depending on your education/national background or brand) tubes are illegal though.

sounds to me like the tyre glue wasn't used properly (hence the sidewalls popping back in). I can't remember the exact reason but I have been told by several professionals in the industry that tubes in tubeless tyres and rims is a bad idea.

I am not sure how tubes would be totally ileagal correct me if i am wrong but i thought all Lancruiser with split rims had tubes.
