Hello All!

I am looking around for a new daily and was wondering if there were many Mk 1 GTi's imported to Australia and what they are currently worth. I had one when I was living in the UK and it was a blast but rusty as hell! Sorry if this should be in the for sale section.

Any info would be greatly appreciated,

MK1 GTi's are pretty rare I believe. They were never sold here originally. There are some around but they are pretty pricey. There might also GTi replicas around though.

No the Mk1 GTI was never sold in Australia.

The Mk1 Golf did not go on sale in Australia until March 1976, locally assembled from CKD parts in VW's Melbourne factory (which was by then owned by Nissan). It was available only in local 1600cc LS spec, in 3 or 5-door bodies.

In 1977 the local assembly of VWs in the Nissan factory came to an end - this included the Golf, Passat and T2 Transporter. All VWs sold in Australia since then have been fully imported. For 1977, the Golf was updated to German-spec GLS, with 53 kW 1600 engine. The GTI was not sold. In 1978 the Golf GLS diesel was introduced, with a mighty 38 kW diesel engine. The petrol Golfs were discontinued in 1980, and the diesel was discontinued in 1982. After that, no more VW passenger cars were sold in Australia until the Ateco relaunch in 1989, with the 2.1 T3 Transporter and the Golf Cabrio and Mk 2 Golf GTI (finally) - although it was a poxy 77 kW 8V spec.

That's it for Mk1 Golfs in Australia. Golf 2 GTIs are very rare as only a few hundred were sold. The 1994-on Mk3 GL had the Euro GTI 2.0-litre 85 kW engine (a special spec for Australia) so they are worth getting, and there are plenty of them about.

there are a few nice mk1's going around. some, like mine have the GTI flares and duckbill front. i've seen a few cruising around with the GTI bits and peices.

between here and the watercooled site finding a nice mk1 shouldn't be a hassel if you don't mind it not being GTI

there is a hand full of early mk1 gti's here in Australia some say they where sold here on request some say otherwise but the people that have them probably wont sell anytime soon there not worth alot of money over here but are worth money to the right people if you know what i mean, the late 83 British campaign gti which are the most sort after with only 3 -4 in Australia (which my car was built to replicate originally) my mate happens to have one in his shed

But going with the trends here and overseas no one is going for the gti look anymore the plastic bumpoers and flares where just add ons to make the cars more modern everyone is going back even converting there gti's with the early chrome bumpers, grills and lights for the early look.
