Old Lithgow VW dealer
Phil74Camper - January 4th, 2009 at 10:47 PM

On the same trip in my 40-bhp in 1982, I also stopped in Lithgow and found the VW dealer there then, which was Eric Young's Motors, 327 Main St, Lithgow. They had became the local VW dealer in 1976, but as you can see, Fiats were more his thing then. He stopped being a VW dealer sometime in the mid-1980s, not long after I got this photo.

Again, that's my '64 in the photo.

You can easily find this place on Google Earth. The building is still original, and iit's now a motor mower shop - painted bright yellow.

Not quite Pete - Eric Young only came on in 1976, after VW's air-cooled era (except for the odd Kombi maybe). I bet he only sold a handful of Golfs and Passats before he went out of business, if any. He was a Fiat dealer who took on VW/Audi as a sideline. I can also see, from his signage, that he also sold Daihatsus, Subarus and Johnson outboard motors. Just as well, as no one could have made money from selling VWs only in Australia after 1976 (when the local factory was lost).

Some of those big ride-on lawnmowers have probably got as much power as the early Beetles though!

Lithgow's VW dealer during the air-cooled era was located on the 'Great Western Highway'; no number given. This has been much redeveloped since the '60s and it's a multi-lane highway now. I imagine any original buildings would have been demolished by now.
