Ninth stage, Volkswagen is 1-2-3 - Sainz, Miller, de Villers. VW is on target for their second Dakar win, after the Iltis won in 1980.

Only one of four Mitsubishis is left (Roma), in fourth, 58 minutes behind Sainz. Other three have suffered crashes or engine failures.
