One of the longest-lasting of the Australian VW dealers was Regent Motors Pty Ltd, of Osborne Park, Perth. They were established at 297 Scarborough
Beach Rd in 1961, and did not cease being a VW dealer until 1997 (!)
However they were purchased by Scarborough Motors Toyota in the early 1970s, and the dealer lot was shared for many years - Toyota obviously taking
over entirely as the years went by.
This is shot of the yard front in 1972, with a low-km used Monaro in front of the VWs and other used/new cars. Note the back wall and brick dealer
office.
This is the same location today - now just Scarborough Toyota. The back wall and dealer office is still the same, and you can see the blank area where
the VW logo used to be.
Today's VW dealer is a few km away at 435 Scarborough Rd - Osborne Park Volkswagen, established 2005.
This shot looks a little further left than the top shot, still the same back wall, with the 'Regents' sign visible. Some nice cars there on the lot in 1972!
To the very far left of the lot, next door, was a BP service station. You can see the end of the back wall here. Today the BP is gone, and its site is
just more of current Toyota dealer.
But how about a factory Cabriolet on the used car lot!!
Thats an oval cab by the way. You ever gone in there and heckled them for some gear?
Well the Cabrio got a new back window in August 1957, same as the sedan, so this one would have to be that old. Could be - it looks like it has
semaphores, in the rear quarter panel just behind the door handle. Wow, a private import! Then again, this one also has front blinkers.
No, I am a Sydney person and haven't been to Perth in many years. I doubt there would be any VW stuff left at this address now.
But it's fun to look. Here's a Campmobile up for sale at the Regent Motors lot in 1972. Then a shot of an MG, with the same big VW sign in the
background.
