Does anyone know anything about a 4-11 VW. I have found one in good condition but don't know much about them. It's a 2 door, 1800 engine i believe,
red and not the most attractive Volkswagen but I've never seen one before.
Any info will be appreciated
The VW 411 [type 4 with type 4 engine] is very rare in Most places.. they were never sold here...
were sold in New guinea and New Zealand... UK USA etc
a few were privately imported...
They were the NEW breed of air cooled VW...
Chassis and body all one part... a luxury car...
made from 1 aug 68 means they were a 1969 model vw
and made until May 1974...
they were Ugly.... with the headlamps in the guards..
Oval headlamps or twin headlamps.?? usually oval..
in 1973 the 411 was replaced with the nicer looking 412 which was My favorite looking VW...
they were made in 2 and 4 doors , sedan and 3 door wagen/variant..
the type 4 engine was made for them.. 1700-1800-1900
and 2 litres... the engine was then used in the VW 914
sports car and the type 4 Kombis ...
the 411 was also made in South Africa...
there are probably less than ten 411-412s in Australia now.
many say they were ahead of their time....
good roadholding etc...
there was one at the VW nationals this year... 411..
LEE
PS: they were so rare in the UK in the 70s that a book I have, they could only find one example of one that had no bumpers etc... Lee
Lee, you are a star...thank you so much....I have never seen on in the UK and I used to live there and only ever seen one on ebay and no thjis one in
the flesh.
Thanks for the assistance..owe you a beer
Steve
VW Australia did import a couple of VW 411s (I have also heard it was four) in 1969 to evaluate the possibility of selling them here, but they would
have proved too expensive and they decided not to proceed. Yes they were sold in New Guinea and New Zealand, which is where most of the private
imports came from. I can think of four or five different 411s and 412s that have been to the Nationals over the years.
As Lee said, they were the first Volkswagen car to be made with a unitary body, rather than body bolted to chassis like the Type 1 and Type 3. They
were designed primarily for the US market, as well as Europe, but the styling was 'according to taste', as they say. The strangest thing about them
is that the sedan was made in both two and four-door versions, but the station wagon was only made with two doors. That hindered sales. VW was also
making the K70 (an NSU design - better than the Type 4) at the same time, which confused buyers. The K70 was eventually killed off, and the 412 was
replaced by the Passat.
Lee they only made the VW 411/412 with either a 1700 or 1800 Type 4 motor. There was no 1900, and the 2000 was only made for the Porsche 914, later
adapted in detuned form for the Transporter.
They are very collectable now! If you find a nice one, grab it and hang on to it.

I always wanted a 4 door VW.... air cooled of course...
I saw a couple of 411s in Newcastle back in the late 60s
Freaked out when i saw 4 doors... lol
Lee
I didn't realise that 412s were only made for a short time
I wonder if VW Australasia were evaluating CKD 411s ??
Maybe they thought that type 3 buyers would go for them... so losing type 3 buyers,,...

The 412LS in my opinion is the best out of the lot. The LE had L jetronic, not the antiquated problem riddled D jet, front and rear make over and better options. Watch out for hidden rust though!! The LS is by far the best example to own, 85hp 1800(yes 10 more hp than a 2ltr kombi)- domed pistons for higher comp than the LE and twin 40 solexes from the factory! stay away from an auto too.
despite being one of the ugliest air cooled vws these are by far one of the best riding vws
they take the best of the superbug front end and type3 rear and slap a nice big type4 in the mix
the wife of the IT bloke at one of my old jobs had a really nice 69 411 they owned since almost new they brought over from PNG
i was so impressed with how it drove i would have considered buying when it was 4sale if it werent so damn ugly
afaik Ray bought it but has now sold it on
its white with VW-411 plates if anyone knows it
what??
a nice 412LS Fuel injected Automatic would have been great....
Joel, did the 411 You mention was it in QLD or NSW??
most of the ones i've seen have all been white...
You used to ba able to buy fibreglass guards for them in the UK..

Wow,
They must be rare! Every post above has miss information contained within!! Sorry Phil, even you didn't get it all right.
Great car? You bet, best air cooled VW made (IMO), collectable, no that's why there are very few left.
There are plenty on Oz, majority are rusting behind an old shed or already packaged for China.
Steve, happy to answer questions if you have any specific ones.
I would be interested in engine and chassis numbers if you get them (first few digits, no need for entire code).
A red one sold on ebay few months ago $500, http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=71897#pid671198
have seen 3 others sell under $1500 in last few years. (well 4 if you consider one sold twice). I'm sure more have moved I'm not aware of.
Was a very nice red varient for sale in Syd that never sold that I'm aware of.
this is the one Lee
altho it had hotwires and lowered springs when Reg had it
it was in Lismore nearly all its life till ray bought it and it went to sawtell not sure what happend to it when he sold it
Reg also reckoned it was the only manual 411 in aus but i didnt buy that one
HaHa...yeh that was me who bought that!! Bloody rustbucket....buggered engine......sent it down to Brisneyland...
They look too renault-ish for my liking.
Ah Ragerty! I may have spoken to you a couple of days back! Now I know the one you are talking about. Are you living "down that way"? I hope to
drop in before the boss goes home again at end of Feb.
Shoot me an e-mail if you get time.

Cheers chaps,
I'll dig the chassis number and engine number out too.
Its a difficult one to value, if there isn't demand for this car, then is it really worth a pretty penny? Or should it valued based on the rarity?
Catch 22...if the price is too high no one will want it.The one i bought was a good example....it was for sale for MONTHS at a "good price" but no one wanted it,which is why I got it at a "cheaper" price.Another thing with them is the spare parts, particulatly the manual gearbox bitz...impossible to get new parts for, hidden rust in the floor is another killer so f there is rust there it requires a LOT of work to repair, therefore lowers the price considerably. The easiest way to value it is by what people are prepared to pay...if too much is asked it will sit there even longer, too little and it will sell overnight.....
If it was in top condition...
it would be worth money for its rarity...
if its not in Good condition...
its not worth much as parts are hard [impossible] to find..
especially body parts...
although nothing is impossible... most things can be repaired or made... just costly...
I'd rather it go to someone who can at least stop any further rust problems etc....
after all they are VERY Rare... catch 22 again.... lol
LEE
Reg had converted the gearbox setup to type 111 ..worked well...the original was unique to the 411
