Lock-right Diff didn`t last very long :-(
TheMiniMan - January 16th, 2009 at 11:56 PM

Yep,,, it`s gone BANG now too

Anyone know where i can get my greedy little hands on a new Quaife diff for a 2L IRS box??? or know who is the Aust distributor for Quaife???

Of know of anyone wanting a V8 Duel cab Bay Kombi ute that eats transaxles on Quite a regular basis ??? :-)

Brad - January 17th, 2009 at 12:11 AM

Jeff at European Motorsports at Geebung I think 5 Basalt St off teh top of my head is the Quaife Guy. Usully has some VW Box's sitting around.

dangerous - January 17th, 2009 at 05:16 AM

Quaife dont make one for the 2lt bus,
but Peloquin do.....that may be whar Jeff has?

I'll give you $30 and a case of VB. How does that sound?

I'm also pretty confident I could cure it's trans issues cheaply....by disconnecting the lead brick from the right foot.

ratbug - January 17th, 2009 at 01:43 PM

I was going to get a pelquin one as a group buy with grogy from the forum, but then the AU$ fell and made it less appealing. We are both still interested in getting one however, but as we are not really an immediate hurry (i'm not), have held off for a while. If more people are interested I guess we could get the ball rolling again.

TheMiniMan - January 17th, 2009 at 03:12 PM

Thanks Brad, i`ll give him (jeff) a call

Dave is there any other diff you could suggest that might be up to the task?

Pete,,, yeah well,,, maybe a few more cartons of VB & we might have a deal :-)

Ratbug... i`m keen,,, i need something, & i`m figuring that it`s now also the time to fit up a decent crown wheel & pinion for it too, so i`ll be talking with Albins (again) on Monday morning :-)

cheers Guys,,, i`ve just fitted a 2nd hand 1800 box that i got off e-bay a while ago so it`s running again
(for now) :-)

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE - January 17th, 2009 at 10:03 PM

$40 and a carton of Corona's.

then i'll fix the problem by putting the right engine back in the car........

Matt did you ever think it could be car's way of telling you it's rejecting the transplant LOL

Good luck yet again with another box!!

TheMiniMan - January 18th, 2009 at 12:38 AM

No Brenden,,, of course not,,, you have it all wrong my friend... it`s plainly obvious the transplant is rejecting the transaxle,,, everytime :-)... all 9 times,,, all it needs is a decent transaxle,,, that`s what the transplant is trying to tell me,,, i actually hear it yelling for a better one every time it goes """BANG"""

At least the gear set is holding up to all the wheels-stands/Autocrosses/Motorkhanas/Long trips loaded with 2&1/2 ton of sh!t etc... now it seems that all i need is a decent diff with a decent cw&p & maybe a new clutch plate too,,, it`s starting to give in a little as well now too :-).... & all that is only going to cost about 3&1/2 -to- maybe 4 grand... give or take a few hundred :-(

Then of course the axles & CVs will have another winge & carry on & continue breaking in protest that most of the drive train becoming tough enough to give them all the grunt, (((yes i`ve smashed a couple so far))) so then it will be a change-over to a set of Porsche axles & CVs etc,,,

Such is Life in the high lane :-)

The race minis are the same,,, heaps of grunt, lots of revs, plenty of abuse, for long periods... & "BANG" goes a gearbox or axle,,, the difference is that i have plenty of mini gearboxes & axles :-)

OH!!! & i`m not thast into coronas,,, maybe if we talk Pure Blondes ????? :-)

66deluxe - January 18th, 2009 at 08:29 AM

Just think after 9 gearboxes you could have used that money towards an ALbins box.

Baja Wes - January 18th, 2009 at 10:44 AM

Don't upgrade the clutch if the transaxle keeps breaking.

hellbugged - January 18th, 2009 at 11:43 AM

got $$$$....?

wanna ZF?.......send me PM

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE - January 18th, 2009 at 02:11 PM

My uncle has run a ZF in his dual cab for something like 15 years without a problem. His dual cab weighs just over 2 tonne empty and tow race cars all over Australia with a mild 2L type 4....

Hi Matt,
I think if you are breaking the lock-right
then a ZF will fail just as fast.
In fact, the 091ZF is weaker than the 1800/002 ZF
in the spider gear area,
and you will twist the 002 sized splines (as I found out) eventually.

If you did not have the lock-right contained inside a steel hemisphere,
it will smash the side off the VW cast iron ones.

If this is the case get an Albins superdiff.
With or without the lock right.

Next option is the Peloquin diff.

Or you could cut your losses now,
dont spend another cent
and get the Albins trans.

Easy for me to say, its not my wallet.

B-rad u 133t mofo, rspec "teh" u FTW ROFL!!! And you say you hate gamers!:lol::lol:

But seriously, isn't repeating the same experiment but expecting a different result the very definition of insanity?

I truly have nothing but respect for you MiniMan (there's a cold Blonde for you at my place any or every day), but isn't it time to go midmount with a really tough gearbag? Surely with your obvious (see threads!!!!) modification expertise you could get pretty much anything through RSC. LOVE your work, and your toys!!!

N.B. Wes is onto something there (he would know): maybe stop making the GB the weak point until you sort out the 'problem'. Weaken the clutch first. Surely that would be a cheaper way of experimenting?

grogy - January 19th, 2009 at 11:00 AM

ouch. happy I didn't buy one now

TheMiniMan - January 19th, 2009 at 08:01 PM

66deluxe,,, yep , you`re dead right, the only problemwas that i didn`t have "That" much money at the start of this but i`ve been able to dribble a few grand into the thing all along so it hasn`t been all in one hit. I wish i did have all that money back then because i would most certainly had just fitted the complete Albins box to start with,,, & i`ve been toying with the idea of the Porsche box on e0bay that Dangerous Dave sent me a link too (thanks Dave i`m still watching it) :-)

Baja Wes,,, i upgraded the clutch straight away (2600lbs) on purpose so i can smash whatever is going to smash now, save me smashing stuff later... I did it this way so i could get all the breakages over & done with early in the piece,,, been here & done all this before with my Leyland P76 powered splitty single cab ute 20 years ago, just didn`t have the right amount of money to do it right in the first place--> see post reply to 66deluxe :-)

Hellbugged,,, Nah,,, i`m after the planetery gear type, i run one of these in my race mini (Quaife type but made by KG Engineering in Melbourne) for the last 10 years & am stoked with it,,, hardly know it`s in there,,, plenty of grip,,, & soft when it needs to be, thanks anyways.

Brenden,,, I`d just break it mate,,, it may take a little while longer than the lockright but still,,, i`ll break it :-) ZF went into production of the MK5 mini diff until they realised it`s not worth making them anymore, they just break

Dangerous Dave,,, yep yopu`re allways right man,,, :-),,, Yes,,,Peneloquin is what i want,,, & yes refer to previous replys---> Yep,,, complete Albins 6speed sequential with Motha-Fk`er diff,,, yes please--- i wish... one problem with all that is that it wouldn`t be so nice & smooth to drive around town,,, i have 6speed dog box in my race mini & everyone thinks they call them dog boxes because of the dog engagment type gears but the truth is they`re a dog to drive on the road :-) great for the track tho :-) i just love my race mini box, except it wears your arm out changing gears all day :-) & yeah i know they make a syncro one,,, Money money Money,,,, i`d need to mortgage my house for the box & transplant expences & i don`t think my house is worth that much :-)

Sinecure,,, thanks man,,, I really apprecial the kind words,,, it means a lot to me thanks... & yeah i really would love to do that (the mid-mount thing) , but i`m figuring that if i just fixed this one up so it didn`t break & kept it as a nice daily driver,,, use it for work ,,, go to the shops,,, tow my race minis to the track,,, rip down to Byron & over to Moreton Island surfing,,, take the occassional houshold rubbish & broken kombi gearboxes & diffs to the dump etc etc etc,,,, then i would purchase another duel Cab (but maybe a splitty) & then went "ALL-OUT" with it & fitted full 4x4 mid engined firebreathing animal power unit of some sort,,, maybe nissan skyline running gear with 800hp or so,,, but sit it at fairly stock height & fairly stock looking, maybe just a set of wide steel rims & a nice retro std paint job,,, then i`d be a happy camper :-) That`s exactly what i`ve been wanting to do since the Dtp of TP made me take my V8 single cab splitty off the road 20 years ago :-(

Grogy,,, yep,,, spot on,,, i priced one up today,,, Ouch!!!... But if that`s what i gotta pay, then thast`s what i gotta pay, do you want to sell yours??? i can`t wait too long,,, this spare 1800 box that`s in it now is going to go bang this week for sure :-)

Pete,,, you`re a pussy sometimes :-) (kidding) :-)

Thanks for all your help guys,,, i`m talking with Albins about a 4.9 CW/Pinnion & i`ll have to grab a diff shortly so i`ll keep you all informed
cheers

grogy - January 20th, 2009 at 05:39 PM

hi, i dont want to sell mine, if u contact 'ongs in california n pay em it will only take a week, thats what mine took.

TheMiniMan - January 20th, 2009 at 11:49 PM

you may be right, and I do drive like a nana by and large. however my gearbox bills can still be measured in 4 figures.

but seriously. I hope you can find the trans to do the trick. you must be getting very sick this.

matberry - January 21st, 2009 at 01:47 PM

Zed has a bolt in 4 speed Renault box, gave you the details a while back ??? Didnt I ??

They have a 10.25" diff, good for 700 hp stock on the street and 450 hp off road with angry V8's behind em.

TheMiniMan - January 21st, 2009 at 02:02 PM

Ah yes Matty, thanks mate i have spoken with him but i havn`t arranged to go around to gork & talk,,, just scared to do all the suspension mods & sh!t :-)

Pete , it`s ok mate we understand, you don`t have to try to justify your femanism to us :-)

OZ Towdster - January 21st, 2009 at 06:41 PM

Matt , you shouldn't need to do the suspension mods unless u also want the height of Zeds duelly

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE - January 21st, 2009 at 08:43 PM

If you fit a Renault and break it then my suggestions are auto(LOL) or re-education of the driver LOL

Sympathy for the machinery of sorts which is what I have learnt........

matberry - January 21st, 2009 at 10:10 PM

Matt the miniman there are no suspension mods required.

TheMiniMan - January 22nd, 2009 at 02:34 PM

dam!!! wee, poo, bum,,, Now what do i do??? i`ve spent a fortune on this 2L box ith full Albins gear kit & main shaft, it`s tough as & basically brand new,,, now i just need a diff & cw/p & i`m done,,, so do i swap g/boxes or do i just get a diff for this box?????

I can just buy the diff & cw/p & shove it all back in there & it should be sweet

stop trying to confuse me :-) :-) :-)

How much will he want for the renault box??? & how much stuffing around with mounting the box & gearshift etc etc etc & also then add the cost & stuffing around with making/buying a new adaptor plate & flywheel to suit the Lexus motor etc etc etc????

does all that add up to being a better propersition than the ease of just sticking a decent diff into my allready strong /new/Albins kitted box???

i used to be quite indescisive,,, but now i`m just not quite sure :-) :-) :-)
