I'm not a fan of it myself, having had the pleasure of the company of my Akita for 11 years before he died, but the main reason Hachiko was treated this way was because of his identification as one of the last remaining pure Akitas, the third most ancient species of domesticated dog (Canis lupus familiaris) in the world (after the Chow Chow and the Shar Pei), and a direct relative of the dingo (the second most ancient Canis lupus). During WW2 most of Japans Akitas were eaten.

Sky burial for me if I can get away with it.
