Ultimo TAFE MV Restoration Course
aussietanker - February 9th, 2009 at 02:49 PM

Hi ...

i hope that i have posted this in the right section - mods pls feel free to move if i messed it up :dork:

i thought that some folks may be interested in this, as i have seen a few posts in the past asking about this type of course ...

Ultimo TAFE is planning on running a motor vehicle restoration course on wed nights ... 5.30pm - 9.30pm for 36 weeks - cost is advertised as $428 ....

i think that most of the prev " non - apprentice' courses for classic and vintage "enthusiasts & restorers" have been at St Georges TAFE ... and they are only on Mon & Tues Nights (i think) ... so the fact that this one is close to central may make it a bit easier for some ...

It covers ...
1. Hand tools and equipment
2. Hand Forming replacement sections
3. Oxy & MIG Welding
4. Metal Finish Repairs
5. Occ Health & Safety

and maybe some other stuff that i missed ....

i am keen to do it ... anyone else? .... i would also be keen to share transport etc with anyone else within cooee of the Hills District that was interested

i presume that it follows the school terms, but am not 100% certain on that ... it starts in a few weeks .... i had a chat to the guy today - they need 3 more people to make up the necessary numbers to run it

It is called "Selected Studies In Panel Beating" ... i couldn't find any details on their website, so i emailed them over the weekend to find out if the class was still going ahead & if there were still spaces available ....

his reply was ...

Quote:
"the class is not full yet. It’s not too late and you can enrol today. Please phone 1300 360 601 for enrolment information"

i also spoke directly with the Head of the course ... i am not sure if he would want his phone number posted here .... but if anyone is interested ... PM me and i will gladly pass it on so that you can speak to him directly rather than the 1800 machine :D .....

have posted this note on a few other forums as well 8)

Get in quick if it's that price for a full 36 week course. Most of these courses are "TAFE PLUS" ones at more than this for much less time. Check out the duration of the course as the TAFE teaching year started today and normally doesn't run over the holiday breaks. Overtime and part time rates are too high now!!

thanks for that feedback 1500s ....

i think this is a new course for Ultimo ... they mainly do apprenticeship stuff in the motor trades area... i think that most of the "lesiure - life enrichment" type of restoration courses for motor restoration are done at St George TAFE ....

the brochure that i was sent definately says $428 for the cost of the course ... and definately says 36 weeks .... i understand that they are about 3 short of the required numbers (altho if i am able to swing the time off work i am going to enroll + 2 other DSKers have pmed me & sound pretty keen - and i only posted the info an hour or two ago) ... so they are going to start the course one or two weeks later than planned .....

i tried to cut and paste the brochure info that i was emailed - so as to post it here ... but somehow just couldn't get my comp to "copy" it .... not sure why :dork:

anyhow ... thanks for the feedback ... i reckon $428 is pretty good for all that teaching ... and a great skill to have if you are keen on restoring cars

We had the restorers course running at Meadowbank TAFE years ago until the bean counters first cut the course and then got rid of panelbeating altogether. Most trades were forced to stop the "hobby" courses a few years back. Made quite a difference in student numbers in the Fitting and Machining area as well! We were "hiding" non trade ones in normal classes but they paid full fees rather than the capped apprentice rates.

I'll see if I can get a few minutes tomorrow to look the course up.

Damn I'd love to go but am busy on Wednesday nights. I've done the St George ones a few times, but the fees this year are ludicrous! It was half the price last year. I heard of the meadowbank tafe courses had a few people fixing vw's there, but I never knew the course name to enrole.

Met "Strex" there many years back!

Just an update on the course for Aussietanker and all.

The course number is 32000 and should (could?) run from next week. Laurence De- Paoli is the teacher to contact and anyone interested should get in to see him asap as he needs ACTUAL enrolments to get the class under way. What he needs is a firm minimum of 12 to start the class. It is a normal 36 week course but that timeframe is from this week and skips the holidays as normal TAFE courses.

It will only run this year under this course number but there may be a similar one if it gets the go-ahead next year, depending on budget constraints.

The contact number for the workshop at Ultimo is 217 3470.

No worries putting the number here for direct into a section as we all know how difficult the 1800 ones are to contact an actual section for info!

Hope this update helps.

I'd be there if I was a tad closer. Unfortunaley 700kms is to far to drive every wednesday.

Cheers

Couldn't find course details with that course number. What is the name of it?

You possibly will not find the number in general TAFE NSW course sites etc. The 32000 course number is known in TAFE as a "bucket course" This is a course where ALL modules are thrown into it and courses can be run with any number of modules to suit the needs of students who need a special course.

As I stated above, you have to first call and actually go in and see Lawrence and ENROL. This is the only way these courses can get off the ground.

With the way the NSW Government is in the red they will no doubt cut these courses as soon as they can. Get in for your chop before it's too late or too expensive! The managers treat many courses (hobby courses) as "non-enrichment" courses which do not have actual "outcomes" and have already axed.

There were still some spots when I checked yesterday (Tuesday) A/T. Course would start after next Wednesday according to Lawrence as he still had to get the go-ahead. That's why he needs the actual enrolment (paid), not just a proposed class list with only a few paid.
