They just can't help themselves
Phil74Camper - March 6th, 2009 at 07:01 AM

What is it with motoring journalists and stupid puns?

Today's Telegraph motoring section has a headline about the Golf VI, just released:

"VW has opted for some different strokes for its next generation Golf superstar".

Haven't the VW Golf puns been done to death? New model tees up, what a nice drive, join the Golf club, take a swing at the new model, its a fair way to travel etc etc. And now 'different strokes'. Hardee har har.

The VW Golf is named after the Gulf Stream wind, not the game played on 18 holes.

I think I feel like a long stroke with my wood now.

Phil, I hope that doesn't mean you're going to be playing a round with yourself. :spin:

Matt.

you are a crack up phil.

yes i agree with you, but i could never have put it that funny.

VWCOOL - March 6th, 2009 at 08:52 AM

.. yeah go on, take a swing at motoring journos...

vw54 - March 6th, 2009 at 08:55 AM

great puns

Phil74Camper - March 6th, 2009 at 09:10 AM

Ah yes the Golf puns are so easy and so much fun. No wonder the motoring journos have been doing it since 1976.

Playing a round with myself would be good but I'd rather get a birdie and put one straight up the middle.

Now try to make some puns out of 'Passat'....

Matt Ryan - March 6th, 2009 at 09:23 AM

When you're finished with that birdie, would you passat to Birchall,...... he's always up for it.

Regards,

Matt.

Ps. jeez, I had to try hard to keep that one reasonably clean!

Hi

At least they didn't mention Hitler.

Steve

Phil74Camper - March 6th, 2009 at 11:05 AM

Good point Steve, but we'll have to get the Daily Tele tomorrow (Sat) to be sure. They are doing a detailed story on the Golf 6 then.

Maybe the Herald too

DirkHedde - March 6th, 2009 at 01:29 PM

I think it was named after the game after all the car is in fact called 'golf' and not 'gulf'. just a thought. i hope they have fixed the dropping window problem from the earlier models.

Matt Ryan - March 6th, 2009 at 03:18 PM

DirkHedde,

The Golf/Gulf is just a "lost in translation thing".

VW have a tradition of naming cars after various (famous) winds of the world - Golf/Gulf, Sirocco, Jetta, Bora, etc. You get the idea, look them up on wikipedia or, elsewhere on the net.

What I want to know is, why on earth they called it the Rabbit for the American market?

Regards,

Matt.

Yeah, but that was a genuine pun , you know what those "whacky Germans" (read, local market ad agency contractors, with VW head office approval) were like when it came to advertising.

I think VW, in general, were pioneers in the art of the "Quirky Advertisement"

I have a video of ads from all around the world and they really stretched the boundaries of advertising in the day.

I'll see if I can find a link.

If I find the link, remember:

You have to be able to recognise, or be old enough to know, what the advertising normal was at the time. Because, some of them by today's standards, are just downright daggy or stupid. Sometimes it's the people in them, who were household names at the time, but nobody knows now. Others were nobodies then and are recognised faces now.

I suppose, it's a bit like learning to appreciate old movies and music, sometimes you need the historical background to "get it".

Matt.

if it was named after the gulf stream, why did the factory fit golf ball shaped gear knobs? :ninja:
