I Broke my Beetle Today
desh - March 19th, 2009 at 10:37 AM

"sigh" what a morning

was out in my Beetle this morning, pulled up at an intersection, went to take off, of course there was a Police car beside me, my car jerked and jumped around trying to take off, then stalled.
Got her going again, took off in 1st, around the corner then went for 2nd, crunch crunch wouldn't engage, took my foot off the clutch to try it again, no clutch!

Not a good position to be stuck in, just around a corner with a broken car, fortunately a nice Commodore driver pulled over and helped me push it off the road.

Thinking might have broken a clutch cable,

She is now at the hospital, hopefully nothing too serious.

:( :(

Thanks for your thoughts,

yes I was a bit worried where I had stopped that I was going to get hit, but as it was an uphill slope I couldn't push it any further out of the way.

Spoke to my mechanic and said should be fixed by tomorrow.

He also thought it sounded like a broken clutch cable

Yes it shouldn't be a major fix so long as it's just the cable; no harm should have been done to the gearbox. It's just an embarrassing thing to happen.

My old Beetle's clutch cable once broke on Woodville Rd in three-lane traffic. It is possible to shift without the clutch by blipping the throttle, which I was able to to do until I could pull off and turn into a side street. Moving from stopped involves starting the car in gear - a bit tricky. Another time I was without a clutch was when the clutch pressure plate failed (one of the three fingers came off), which needs the engine out to fix.

Both my VWs are autos nowadays...

Yes I'm used to driving auto cars,

Autos are good around the city where you are otherwise continually changing up or down in stop start traffic.

I would have preferred an auto beetle, but you only get these on the later cars, which in my opinion don't look as nice as the older cars.
