grogy - March 19th, 2009 at 05:16 PM

hi, anyone cut up the rear of their oval to fit a bigger motor, without wrecking it and making it easy to put back to standard. .....grogy

that oval is really cut, i was just lookin at the rear area round tappet covers, its too narrow. i just took out a 1600 and what ajob, , just not enuf room. so if i put in something with long rods and stroke................

Mick058 - March 20th, 2009 at 07:04 AM

im putting a suby in my 36hp engine bay - maybe keep an eye on the thread to see how much cutting gets done.

link below.

I don't know what you mean there's pleanty of room my engine's been out a couple of times no worries. Just have to take the twin carbs off before.

It's just a barstard to change the spark plugs with the twin carbs.

Just keep it as it is how often would you be taking the engine in and out anyway.

Your 1600 should be just as easy to get out it's a bit of a tight fit but it's not something that you do every day.

one of my long term projects is a 56 oval, front and rear are cut off for a baja conversion and it will also get a factory ragtop welded in, its on an irs pan, body lift kit, kombi box, raised susp and type 4 engine conversion, that shouls ster up the purists:lol:

thanks, yea thats pretty much it, do u know what size stroke n rods that motor has. i think i'll have to completely remove the inner section where that one has the tappet covers touching.

Matt Ryan - March 20th, 2009 at 10:35 AM

They're not touching grogy, that's where he has cut away to get clearance. If you cut away any more than the bare minimum you will weaken the bumper support bracket.

By the way the pic is vw54's car.

Regards,

Matt.

the engine drops out under the car you don't have to take the tappet covers off to get the engine out.

grogy - March 20th, 2009 at 10:54 AM

maybe they all bit diff, with mine the tappet covers are hard against the inside of car the bottom studs are still slightly inside the trans, the spigot shaft is just clearing the thrust. i have to wriggle motor back, drop the jack abit and keep doin it as its hard agains the valance all the way out as i lower the jack, also putting pressure on the bottom engine studs as they havent cleared the trans. very tight fit, and thats just with a standard 1600.

grogy - March 20th, 2009 at 10:56 AM

its on a later pan also with irs trans, not sure if this brings the motor further back

rose - March 20th, 2009 at 10:58 AM

its tight you do need some leavers that's normal

I normally have to have my distributor out and fan belt off too. It just gives me a tad more room to clear the bottom case studs and spigot shaft, of course to go back that little bit you have to be on enough of an angle to be clear at the rockers.

I'm sure over time the threads of the case studs will clearance the holes in the gearbox as they always come out covered in filings. When it gets to that point I might start using nylock nuts at the bottom.

It's an adventure every time my engine comes out. Sometimes I struggle with it for ages, other times it practically falls out. Same when going back in.

I don't have any clearance cuts and it's a 1300 twinport (same dimensions as 1600) in a '61 beetle.

Matt.

Gringo_54_oval - March 20th, 2009 at 08:15 PM

get hold of a porta power and pump out the bits that touch your rocker covers.might have alil more room for your engine

grogy - March 22nd, 2009 at 03:26 PM

thats agood idea, but i think i have to cut away... as the rods n stroke will add about 20mm to the width . but i suppose its already on later pan, so more mods wont make a lot of diff.

Don't do that to the oval, do it to your 356 Porsche instead.

Turbo54 - March 23rd, 2009 at 09:46 AM

I have chopped my 54 up a bit.
I asked myself the same question but my answer always came back to, why would I ever change it back. it's not like they are ever going to be worth a massive amount of money.

hellbugged - March 23rd, 2009 at 05:44 PM

Heath, that air intake position worries me, i have a oberg filter mounted there and the amount of tar and small rocks and other crap built up on top of it every couple of months is my concern for you (yeah i have seen the other pics with your filter)
