Looking for any pics or info on a Type 3 Baja Wagon. I now have one and am just investigating possibilities for it.
Thnking of fitting a body lift ??
Brad, i have one at home (using work's puter) thats in an early stage of baja.
I will post it when i get home.
:thumb
Sweet idea!
I've looked @ a doin the baja job to a notch that i have lyin around @ home.
brad, could u post a couple of pics of yours?
steven
I wonder what the Old fellow who previously owned it will think?
:jesus
Sounds like a great idea to me .
A guy out Samford way used to have a Baja type 3 wagen. He came to one of the Dubs by the Pub runs. I probably got pics at home.
At least you don't need adjusters to raise the front of the type 3.
PS - You silly man, what do you want a type 3 for.
I have no idea why I got one, guess casue it was there and I havn't owned a complete one before.
I don't even know why I am going to Baja it I have a couple of Manx Buggies and a Hilux. In think in general I have no idea, but then I think why
not, if the damn things didn't weigh so much I could probably even get somewhere in it.
Maybe I will just clean it up, fix teh rust and sell it as a nice stock T3 Wagon with Rego and a RWC, who knows, a new day a new idea really.......

I had a 71' squareback about 10 years ago , that I bought off a guy who drove it across the simpson desert. It had a 1776 and cleared rear guards to fit 10R15s on the back. He went with a couple of old cruisers and did the trip with less hassle than his mates, and only used half the petrol! I never got to finish the project but I've always wanted to do one since. A TYPE 3 makes a lot of sense, It's roomier than a bug but not much heavier. The main hassle is trying to fit wide tyres and still look o.k. with poxy rubber flares.
Not much heavier ??? Only 300 kg
1/3rd of the wieght of a beetle
Here brad....
Its an 69 i think.....
Hey, Type 3 sqbacks are very cool and great to drive

Don't think I've seen a Baja Type 3 wagon but??
OK, they are so different to Type 1's which are a classic, but they do have amazing style all the same:thumb :kiss
Enjoy it Brad
There is a great example in Hobart of one. I think I have a photo, body lift kit ,flared guards, skid plates etc. Great job.:thumb
this was on the site a while ago
think it was from melbourne
All it needs is a set of wheels!!!!
hehe I think there might be some manx in that baby ..
On Samba there is a type3 body raising Kit 3" might help?
MitcHe3ll
.
Another one of the same car....
Then there's this one......
I've looked at my two type 3's for the past 5 years, trying to visualise how to make them into a decent baja, and the conclusion I came up
with was.... Why bother?
It doesn't matter what you do to it, it will always be heavier than a bug or a buggy, and it is exceedingly difficult to increase the approach
and departure angles. If you cut the front off, there are no kits available to replace the nose. If you cut the back off, you lose the cooling air
duct that runs across the back. Jacking it up will help, but it will never be as good as a bug or a buggy.
Sure they have more room than a bug or buggy (or probably both put together :thumb), but if that is the incentive, why not do a kombi?
Ok, so you want to raise some eyebrows, and kombis have been done to death (well, not enough yet
), but how many people actually recognise a type 3 as a VW anyway?
Don't get me wrong, I would love to see a GOOD type 3 baja, preferably a squareback so it has lots of room for camping gear. I just couldn't
justify the amount of crap I would have had to go through to get it to the standard I wanted. I don't even like bugs, but I'll do a baja bug
before I attempt a type 3.
Who knows Brad, with all that spare time you have on your hands, you may be just the person to do it! :P
Firstly Kombis ... been there owned that.. Now the type 3, I have two options..
Option 1 - fix the small amount of rust that is in it, get it a RWC, slap 6mths rego on it and a lick of paint sell it off for a couple of grand. The
old guy had it since 1972 and even kept it serviced by VW, interior is immaculate.
Option 2 - Baja the bitch cause I haven't done one before. I would give it a 2" lift, biggers tyres cut of teh spare wheel well and rap the
front in bars and a bash plate, rear woudl be left stock but 5" higher. Now if I could find out why they are so damn heavy then I may be able to
fix that weight issue.
Decisions Decisions
Well, maybe if you cut the front off, fibreglass bonnet, and cut the roof off, you might actually get it down to the same weight as a Beetle!
:thumb
I wouldn't think the gearbox would be an issue, just whack a Beetle or early kombi one in. :thumb
Brad, is it swingaxle or IRS? If its a swinger you could adapt the kombi reduction boxes and gain both clearance AND a suitable ratio for big
mudchuckers.

Ok, I'm starting to think its a good thing, but only because I know you won't mind going the whole hog! :o:o:o:thumb
After 20 mins of searching through last years photos on CD I found this bigger photo of the one Colin posted. I got this off the web a couple of years ago.
It is IRS and why would putting a beetle box in help ???
Aren't Beetle ones a better ratio final drive? I was under the impression (but can't remember where I heard it) that 1500 boxes are a good
choice. Sorry I didn't take more notice, I just remember being glad that I already have one.
I'm sure irs type 3's all had 4.125 final drive ratio's same as the 1500 swing axle beetle
marcel
All very interesting, I think it will get what his has :>
So are you gonna Baja it or not?
I thought I'd have a play last night, just to wet your appetite.....

I have to admit, I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.
It's just a pity that there is so much work to do to make these tyres fit properly.
For anybody who's wondering, the rear tyre is a 33x12.50, and the front is a 7.50-16 :o
It's just a pity that the front tyres are hard up against the footwell
That's real cool!
I can just imagine that hooning along the dunes
and getting air!
