Received a letter today saying My Beetle wasn't insured...
68AutoBug - May 21st, 2009 at 11:31 PM

I received a letter today from the NRMA classic car insurance saying My Beetle's car insurance ran out a month ago....

I rang shannons and got a quote over the phone..
he said that the bottom had fallen out of VWs prices..??
anyway he was sending Me a quote in the mail...

I then received a phone call from the NRMA classic car insurance asking If I had received my renewal notice..
which I had about a month or so ago...
anyway, I signed up again with them, My beetle is insured for $5500 for $198-50 excess $300..
I can travel 9000kms a year..
naturally if the car is a write off they give you the car for free...

I could have insured it for $11,500 a few years ago with the NRMA Classic but it was just too expensive for Me to Pay... so i went to $5,500...

How do they know you never travelled more than 9000kms. I have insurance on my bike which only allows usage 4 days a week but also baffled how they monitor that? Must look into insurance on my Kombi, that gets used only about 3 days a month!

i really dont believe Big Brother is that good. Anyway with my four days a week clause I can actually use in one week every day if dont the next (allows me to do long tours). And when i do use it to go to work I dont pass any tolls or cameras.

Insurance companies never ask for klms on your car. All our bugs are insured through Shannons for what we ask to have them insured for my oval is insured for $15k and so is the 70 bug. our 62 for $8k all bugs insured for a total of $50k and it cost me $90 amonth all they wanted was an email of pics and they did it and they know I can't drive them all at once so its cheap for all of them.

in the uk i had a policy that allowed me to drive a sports car one day per week, i asked how did they know, the reply....... its easy, the day you crash will be the day you drive it! go figure!

they also said if I anly drove 5000kms one year I can add it to the next year.... lol
I think its 3 times a week...
but this also carries over if i don't drive it for a week or so

I couldn't afford the $90 a month rose... lol
[I could have insured it for $11,500 but I couldn't afford the premiums...]

I believe registration should be the same...
one set of plates and put them on the car You are driving
maybe only on cars over 30 years old....
sounds good to Me...

Yeah I've often wondered how they monitor how many days a week a car gets driven. I was tempted to insure mine as something I drive no more than three times a week but knowing my luck something will go wrong and they will have their way of finding out. Didn't wanna risk it so went full comp. It's something like $410. Not too bad I guess. It's insured for $8,000.

I'm with you on this one Lee. We should have number plate holders like we do P plate holders. They'd have to have some kind of lock on them though so people cant nick your plates.

i have a friend in Lucerne, Switzerland n they have a one plate one person type a deal..
he has 4 cars like a mustang and a flashish volvo etc n he just changes plates as he cant drive more than one car at a time..
good deal for cost n practicality..
but what if ya have several plates... hmmm
