Whats this body molding called?
alien8 - May 28th, 2009 at 02:17 PM

Did a search and found nothing.
Whats the history behind the curvy chrome body molding? Was it a particular model only?

"Flash trim". Not sure, but I think it was a dealer-fitted accessory.

hth

Mick058 - May 28th, 2009 at 02:44 PM

wasn't it an Australia only thing??

polak - May 28th, 2009 at 02:50 PM

yeah it was a dealer fitted flash trim kit, holden and a few others did a similar thing. as far as i know it was only an aust. thing as i havent seen anything like that anywhere else. hard to find and for a decent complete set, your looking at 300-ish upwards

Mick058 - May 28th, 2009 at 02:53 PM

the flash was an Australian ONLY accessory...
they started adding them back in the late 50s until the middle of the 60's...

I really don't know if Volkswagen Australasia sold them or they were just a dealer added accessory...
Many cars had them fitted - Fords-Zephyr-Consul-Falcon Holdens- FJ- FE-FC-FB-EK-EJ-EH- Vauxhalls- Simcas-

LEE

Wolfsburg Automotive in Victoria sell them new....
Perfectly made....

You just put this up as a hint for me to do the same to mine didn't you. With the stripe, the rack and the lowness.

It's even the sameish colour as mine. Didn't know red would go so well with it.

helbus - May 28th, 2009 at 06:10 PM

There were flash kits sold under brand name Tilli or Autolux. The kits were made to fit Vauxhall Holden etc. Common in the 50's and early 60's on Holdens

polak - May 28th, 2009 at 07:57 PM

greedy53 - May 28th, 2009 at 07:59 PM

i think george at classic has after market ones

Joel - May 28th, 2009 at 08:19 PM

its just the flash in the pan thing of the moment (excuse the pun) with the early beetle crowd

10-20 years ago noone gave a crap about them
most people where removing and chucking them out when dechroming and going cal look
yet now a crappy bashed up dull original set can fetch $500
if only i knew that 10 years ago, the graveyard i used to know had a few that all got crushed

give it another 10 years all the guys will be moaning about the holes they drilled in the sides of the bugs

wolfsburg automotive were doing a repoop kit in staino for a while for $550 dunno if its still availble

Turbo54 - May 28th, 2009 at 09:16 PM

They were the thing of the moment about a year and a half ago also. I was collecting them for a while and had 4 sets at ne stage sold a couple and kept 2 for each of my ovals. I am looking for a set of front bullets to complete another set if anyone can help.
Thanks

Hiya All,

Just a stateside perspective on this trim.............ain't seen anything like it in these parts. Just using my base of experience, I'd say it's one off custom job. But I'm thinking Lee must be right in that this Flash Trim was an Aussie only kinda deal.

Interesting because it reminds me of the side trim on a 55 or 56 Chev.

Joel - May 29th, 2009 at 07:04 AM

i second that question, where have you been hiding?? lol i havent been into dubs for a very long time (only 4yrs) but have already seen quite alot of cars sporting these flash kits, almost bought one actually. coming from an old holden background iv seen alot of these on them too... they were a dealer fitted accessory for many manufacturers. Australia tend to follow many american trends which is why u may think they look like something of an old chev.

Bookwus - May 29th, 2009 at 11:45 AM

Hiya Guys,

I'm in Oregon.

Hey! I don't doubt that the Flash Trim was once big down in Oz. What I was trying to say is that if I saw this trim in the USA I'd be inclined to say it was a one-off because I've never seen anything like it here.

Turbo54 - May 29th, 2009 at 11:50 AM

I sold two of mine to guys in the states so you maybe will see one in the flesh bookwus.

ahhh well that explains it, thought u were here in oz.... lol

Matt Ryan - May 29th, 2009 at 01:03 PM

The reproduction flash kits are made by Wolfsburg Automotive not Wolfsburg West.

The originals were slightly wider than stock VW trim and needed their own special clip for fitting. The reproductions are the same width as stock trim and use the stock clips.

In VWMA issue 19 Aug- Oct '08 their ad had them priced at AU$550.00 including clips. The last few issues have run a slightly different ad that does not feature the flash kits, so it might pay to ring and see if they are available.

Wolfsburg Automotive: 1300-370-310.

I've heard that dealers often fitted them as a way to shift stock that remained from the previous years model. They used hinge mirrors, radios and other bling for this purpose too.

Regards,

Matt.

Nope, but I wannabe. I'm saving my pennies so I can come down and pay a visit. Australia is the one place I have always wanted to see. Absolutely gotta see a kangaroo out in the bush before I cash in my chips.

68AutoBug - May 30th, 2009 at 12:04 AM

I had a 59 beetle many years ago with the red flash...

many of the stainless strips were just cut off to meet another strip
but the quality ones were formed perfectly at both ends.

by the 70's they were no longer in fashion...

so they disappeared when the old beetles died...etc..

Plenty of those animals around here Mike...
its why i drive in the center of the road at night so if they jump out You can go the opposite way.... either side...
[I don't drive in the center on the main highways]

there is a dam locally Mike where the Kangaroos go to drink at sundown... there are places in Australia where you can actually pat and feed Kangaroos..

When I get down there you'll have to drive me out there to take a look!

There's a piece of film that shows up on TV here now and then. It's a clip of a Great Red Kangaroo at full speed taken from an airplane or helicopter. The amount of ground that animal covers in one leap is jawdroppingly amazing. Just wonderful watching that animal do what he does.

Now I know that y'all down there in Oz may have a slightly different view of the kangaroo. I'm sure the farmers do! But this is one of things that this old Yank just has to see.

polak - May 30th, 2009 at 09:05 AM

just wait till you get punched out by one hahahha, i got smacked out by one when i was 4yrs old.... got it on video, was hell funny :D alot of ppl havent seen them in action, but they box pretty well

polak - May 30th, 2009 at 01:24 PM

hahahaha, they scream when they are doing it!!! i was staying at a friends house in beenleigh qld and woke up to this horrific screaming. when i went outside to see what it was i saw two koalas going at it in the tree out the back.

amazeer - May 30th, 2009 at 02:35 PM

trouble with kangaroos is that most of the ones you see end up in your front bumper. Bloody emus too. And wombats. Snakes. fer christs sake, why dont someone educate our wildlife. When I was a kid visting Stawell VIC there used to be heaps of koalas. Every second tree you looked in. Last time I was there I didnt see 1. Dirty buggers all got clamidia I guess.
