Should I lower the bus? Edit - Bus is lowered now
helbus - June 17th, 2009 at 11:24 PM

I am thinking about 5 inches (125mm)

I will do it, I am not just flying in a pipe dream.

kombivw - June 18th, 2009 at 05:42 AM

You know my bus has travelled all of Australia and even went from Broome to Darwin just after the rains. The sign stated " 4 Wheel drive only". But that never stopped her. I went to the Nationals. Speed bumps. What speed bumps. I just love the way she rocknrolls. What is it with you guys lowering them ?

BOOMERDOG - June 18th, 2009 at 07:59 AM

:cool:slam it!

Jay_1965vw - June 18th, 2009 at 08:01 AM

Nah, leave it as it is :)

Phil74Camper - June 18th, 2009 at 08:11 AM

I'm with David and Jay. Why would you want to crunch your front or motor on the next driveway, hump or shopping centre bump you come to? It's great being up above everything, as VW intended. Leave it stock.

greedy53 - June 18th, 2009 at 08:29 AM

drop it but it really is up to you, when i bought slim home it was my wife who wanted it into the weeds, and aswe don't go to any adventurs involving 4x4's.
it looks great and sure there are some bloody big holes around that look like mine enterances as i'm pushing 60 i just love the look i still use it for carrying all types of shiti droped mine 6 inches

pete wood - June 18th, 2009 at 08:59 AM

I think up to 4 inches is easy enough and not bone jarring, but after that it starts to wear ball joints fast and become nasty

bajachris88 - June 18th, 2009 at 09:04 AM

airbags! :tu::lol:

have best of both worlds then :P

polak - June 18th, 2009 at 09:58 AM

5 inches??? y so little?! i say deal with the bumps and muffed up ride because the look is going to make up for it all  every car i have ever owned has been slammed and i wouldnt have it any other way:crazy:

pete wood - June 18th, 2009 at 11:27 AM

yeah well, someone I know well drove their slammed split bus to VIC for a show and had to stop and give their back a regular rest as the ride was so bad. helbus, you should talk to Indian Automotive. they have a few products for making a bus ride properly even when it's low. torsion bar stiffeners are just one of them. while you are there, ask them how low is still comfy.

colonel mustard - June 18th, 2009 at 11:49 AM

hey, how do some one those really low splittys go... like el concreto, how rough would that be?

jenz58 - June 18th, 2009 at 12:16 PM

Pete were you hoping for consensus on this one:lol:

Sounds like you want to do it so go head, IF the boss agrees;)

Do you plan to go bush camping with the boys in it later down the track? If just lowering it 5 " should still get you into most places?

I think Helbus would look cool

Klaus - June 18th, 2009 at 03:32 PM

do it ,if you want to get it really low put a link pin beam out of a split in it narrow it 4-5 inches and get some 5 inch drop spindles from wagens west then tub the arches and run 45 series tyres , convert rear to lowlight drums and run wide 5 all round with a sherman or csp disc brake kit up front.

amazeer - June 18th, 2009 at 05:59 PM

A kombi would have to be the worst thing to lower. With so much front overhang they scrape everywhere. Even at stock height my bullbar used to drag around a fair bit. The best part of owning a kombi is the height and the fact that you can go anywhere.

rocknrob - June 18th, 2009 at 06:56 PM

Hi Peter, you are probably going to use an adjustable beam to lower the front and the rear is just adjusting the splines and then just changing tyres can mean a couple of inches so yeah go for it...it's easily adjusted...I'm running 255/65/16 on the rear at the moment but 225/45/16 is 60mm or 2.5 inches lower:tu: I change rims and tyres for bush trips ....easily done on a kombi:yes:

vassy66T1 - June 18th, 2009 at 07:51 PM

Depends whether you want a daily drive or a weekend cruiser?

If my Kombi was just a weekend warrior I would lower it. But as is, (standard) wen I have my two sons and all the camping gear in it is sitting low enough to have to be careful on the big bumps. Love the look .. want the practicality .. it's always a compromise.

T-34 - June 18th, 2009 at 09:01 PM

Low is good, but too low is just damn bouncy.

Had a slammed splitty before - looked way cool but was a biatch to drive on long journeys unless the road was dead smooth - a slammed bus is a lot different to a slammed Bug / Type 3 etc - You sit right over the front wheels, so you just get bounced up and down - on real big bumps you'll crack your head on the roof too. With Bugs and Type 3's you're in-between the wheels so you don't feel the bumps as much.

If you're gonna do it, I would go with dropped spindles to try and retain some of the ride and prevent it from being too bouncy.

Just my 02c

Handles well, rarely scrubs, take it slower on gutters and speed humps, avoid potholes. Needed cut rubber stopper and notch springplates to stop hitting the stopper on every bump when you have people in the back, so you have some suspension. Yes it is a bit more bouncy, but at least it drives more like a car now and not a boat.

Kuch

I have ridden in el concreto and she rides just fine thanks !!

helbus - June 18th, 2009 at 09:40 PM

I have spoken to Indian Automotive, they are the only way to go. I have seen others and used one other lowering kits, and the Indian ones are the best quality and more complete with bump stop adjusters, instructions etc.

I have done two full lowering jobs on Bay busses already 85mm and 110mm, so doing it is not a hard thing, just takes a little bit of time.

Done heaps of offroading, those days are not as extreme now, since we put the mag wheels on a few years ago. There is no bullbar now, and the front numberplate is up on the bar rubber.

Lets see how it looks and goes. Will keep you posted.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE - June 18th, 2009 at 10:34 PM

Nothing like cornering harder than the rice boys in the rice rockets..... they hate it when you take them on a bend around the out side LOL

helbus - June 18th, 2009 at 11:01 PM

:fakesniff:
But does that mean I will be the rice rocket with the Suby engine? :fakesniff:

All done. I will post pics tomorrow.

Jay_1965vw - June 19th, 2009 at 07:40 PM

Erm, that was quick!

If I'm driving Chucky I might drive over you

helbus - June 19th, 2009 at 09:25 PM

Quick? It took me a few days to do it, along with ball joints, drive boots, brakes, pads, service, other bits etc. I try not to drag things out.

jenz58 - June 20th, 2009 at 10:04 AM

Hehe ... we can't say you're a procrastinator Pete ... well done!

....watch out for Jay n Chucky in the rearview though

helbus - June 20th, 2009 at 03:40 PM

I have finished, and this is the result of a wimped out 100mm drop. The front ball joints and swaybar just dont allow for that extra inch.

helbus - June 20th, 2009 at 03:41 PM

The total height of the bus now at the highest point of the roof is 1.83m

BOOMERDOG - June 20th, 2009 at 09:11 PM

take your swaybar off or buy a cranked swaybar & reverse the balljoint's ,or get lowered joints with more spherical travel[make them mount from underneath rather than the top,you retain a certain amount of the standard geometry for the track ends..done it with a few of mine..just ream out the trailing arms & press fit new concentric ball joint seats.] handling is improved & no bump-steer...
paired with dropped spindles it works a treat..
nice job btw mister...

izac - June 20th, 2009 at 09:53 PM

looks sweet man
