here we have a 76 bus i s told that it would not idel so i bought it as ya do.well the dam thing with timing light wants to set at the bottem 180 from the top any ideas as soon as i go to the top it stops funny ha ha:grind::lol::fakesniff:
when you use nthe timing light i can just keep turning it with the timing mark and turn the dizzy all the way to the 180 deg from the tdc

Sorry?
I think I can understand the first bit, but whats after you bought a Kombi that doesn't idle? something about 180 out from TDC? Long day and am tired but I can't undertsand.

greedy53 - June 22nd, 2009 at 07:30 PM

im not sure the dam thing took all day to just get going and i'm no stranger to the old vw's but this is just weird it's as if it wants to fire at the oppersset the marked tdc i tryed to swap the leads around dam nearly killed me dog with the big bang
sorry about being a bit vague hard to explain
the exhaust stroke sounds about right thanks i had just run out of ideas

take the rocker cover off when you get it on TDC and check the valves are closed to make sure its the firing stroke:tu:

greedy53 - June 23rd, 2009 at 04:42 AM

ill try the exhaust idea now my brain has been given an idea i'll go and screw it up THANKS

bajachris88 - June 23rd, 2009 at 01:17 PM

so you have confirmed that the dissy shaft drive gear in the block is not 180 degrees out?

Was the motor working at all before hand? not fresh rebuilt? otherwise i would be curious with cam timing!

greedy53 - June 23rd, 2009 at 04:14 PM

well another day another cry i tryed the exhaust idea, with no joy and it's not a new install factory motor was running well just stoped idseling and the chap i bought it of tryed verything to get it to idel so it's anyones guess what it's been set at .i pulled the dizzy and did an overhaul, start of problem so i removed the 2 carbys did the wash and blow through with compressor all good,
so i mite as well heave it as is seems to work for the bus,it's just strange when the timing light works at the bottom of the pully,it has 60000 on the dial the chap i bought it of swares thats correct and after crawling all over it i'm inclined to agree
thanks all for the ideas

vwvic - June 28th, 2009 at 08:29 PM

I had the dizzy out of my kombi motor the other day.I turned it over by hand a couple of times with the dizzy out and when I went to put it back in I found the drive gear had popped up and was now out of time.I would check out the position of the drive gear cos this was a really easy mistake to make.

greedy53 - June 29th, 2009 at 06:59 PM

amazeer - June 30th, 2009 at 07:03 PM

Dont let it stress you. Just put your timing light on #2 wire. All fixed.

greedy53 - July 1st, 2009 at 05:06 PM

now that sounds crazy enough to work where did you pick that one up
