OK.. Does anyone have a beetle engine that doesn't leak oil???
68AutoBug - August 6th, 2009 at 12:39 PM

HI
I use castrol GTX2 in My beetle engine [20w/50]

at the moment, My engine has a slight seepage of oil under the engine near the centre...

it always has a drip or 2 just sitting there....

doesn't actually drip while the car is parked....

I have large pieces of cardboard I lay under the engine..

I usually have no problems with the tappet covers or the sump gasket...
but somtimes there will be a drip of oil on one or two of the capnuts... not at the moment..

sometimes a drip at the bottom of the breather hose..
[used instead of the pipe]

Does Your Beetle leak oil???

none of mine leak, one had a seep/hot oil smell for a while until I discovered a cracked rocker cover cork

yeah... mine is now leaking from the oil pump... or crank pulley. not keen to find out either way. oh well. probably scrap it by the end of next year anyway.

Hey Lee, never noticed before, but is that a fibreglass rear valance on your car?

Yeah, I just picked one up from Joel on the Klubfest day, but was concidering not using it, but I think it looks great on your 68, so it should go well on my 73. Question, have you had any issues with the heat that your exhaust causes in relation to the fibreglass? Sorry for taking the thread off track.

No.. It did get really hot after driving in the summer...
with the standard muffler which really puts the heat out in that area...
when i was putting Yoga mats all round My engine bay..
inner and outer and above the gearbox
I also put it on the valance... 3 layers...
You can tell by the edges turning up that they got hot..
but the valance won't get that hot, I'm assuming now with extractors and a single muffler...

but then the air coming from the engine is very hot too...

paint never bubbled etc....
which I have seen on metal ones....

cheers

Mines leaking more than i'd like it to...

A few drips i can deal with, but currently i guess with it parked overnight there'd be 10 or more by the morning.

Seems to be 1 x rocker cover and sump seal, despite me changing them recently.

Joel - August 6th, 2009 at 05:15 PM

my first original 1600 i built about 12-13 years ago stayed leak free for years.....till i got the modifiers bug and kept pulling it apart to change stuff

Jason that other sherman valance that was on my black bug lasted 12 years with the heat of a rotary on it and never faulted at all or the paint

no it doesn't mark its spot must be female.

sweet! I was thinking that i may have to heat wrap the hotdog.... but then id have to go from the headers to push it out anyway, so that would be a mighty fine waste of money/time.

Our had a pool about the size of a 50c every day just from the rear main seal, and a couple extra's 20c and 10c size from other spots.

I had the engine pulled and resealed all round. The thing I like about Beetles is it only cost $250 labour to have it done.

polak - August 6th, 2009 at 07:52 PM

my stock original 1300 didnt leak, had alot of oil on it but never leaked.... new motor leaks from rear main but only a few drips, then again im running really thin oil also, who cares, decided that its getting torn down anyways as im going a little more silly:lol: as far as i know most vw are supposed to leak, they just mark their spot

OZ Towdster - August 6th, 2009 at 08:57 PM

My old Manx was a non leaker for many a year( 7 + in fact ) which was quite remarkable for an engine thrown together from second hand bits and pieces .
Although i contribute much of this to my extra time spent prepping my case faces ,using silicon seals ONLY on my push rod tubes ( the white seals ) and as Mr VW intended using ONLY high temp grease to seat said push rod tube seals and permaseal aviation sealant everwhere else , again with well cleaned and FLAT matting surfaces .
What else can i say it's just like a nice paint job , IT'S ALL IN THE PREPERATION

and you don't masturbate either

vwvic - August 6th, 2009 at 09:53 PM

All the second hand engines I've had have leaked and none of the brand new ones have . I think putting new seals all over and aviation sealant on everything else is the answer to stopping oil leaks.

Phil74Camper - August 6th, 2009 at 10:07 PM

I can still see the large oily spot on the street, outside my place, where I parked my old Beetle for many years. The oil is now ingrained into the tarmac, in a spot some 20 cm in diameter.

Amazing as the Beetle has been gone for 8 years now. The Kombi's new engine weeps the occasional drop but nothing to worry about (the previous engine leaked from the case plugs). The Golf doesn't leak at all.

Thats quite reasonable!

I might bite the bullet and pay someone who has a bit more determination and patience to sort it out once and for all!

68AutoBug - August 7th, 2009 at 02:10 PM

I wash under My beetle engine with sprayon degreaser
and hose off all the oil....

I did have a leaking oil hose going to My oil cooler...

I replaced the hoses etc and oil cooler...
and now

I had no leaks at all for 500kms....

no there are just the odd drip under the engine...

maybe it drips when the car is travelling and the engine is hot...??

but No big drips under My engine now...

I have several 36ers that never leak. Keep them pulled apart and in boxes, they never leak that way.

Old Hutcho - August 7th, 2009 at 08:58 PM

Well, I am a very old man and I know the secret to stopping oil leaks.

Stop putting oil in the top! God its so simple. You young blokes. I dont know!

Yeah i have a single port 1500 autostick sitting in the shed and it hasnt leaked a drop, i even broke off two of the studs holding the oil plate in and still its sweet :S

Joel - August 7th, 2009 at 10:14 PM

how long since its been running?
they stop leaking pretty well with lack of use

i sold an engine to a forum member last weekend thats been sitting for a while without dropping anything
i ran it for him a couple of times before he bought it and i noticed after a few days it had dropped a few spots

GeorgeL - August 8th, 2009 at 06:57 AM

The last two new Mexican engines I bought have been pretty oil tight. The only drippage is from the road draft tube and that is only an occasional drop.

VW de Mexico appears to use non-setting Hylomar on the case joint and oil pump. That's pretty good stuff for sealing hot oil.

donn - August 8th, 2009 at 10:14 AM

Yep, leaks just fine thanks.

djnee - August 8th, 2009 at 06:06 PM

Righty....just re-sat the rocker cover gasket again....hopefully this will work :)
