Is this a 70's with an oval window grafted in? Or is it a 56 with a 70's rear clip welded on?

Hmmm

Going by the size of the rear side windows i'd say 70's

vw54 - August 10th, 2009 at 05:53 PM

i would stay clear of that one

its a late oval body with the flat inner door skins
just had the usual 70s-80s treatment of a late decklid and valance, hacked up dash and dropped onto a late 1300 floor pan

whatever it is, I dont think it will sell too quickly.

Although, it does have turbo seats!

geez cant people pick 6 volt side windows
theyre nearly 2" smaller than 12 volt bugs

Absolutely Joel, it's an oval body shell (pre 1958) without any doubt. The side windows are considerably smaller than the later 12-volt ('68 and on) body shells.

In this respect it is like the Brazilian Beetle (Fusca), which never upgraded to the 12-volt body. They kept the 6-volt side windows all the way through. Here's a picture - have a close look at the door and side windows and see how they are the same as the early 6-volt VWs.

Another way, if you aren't sure, is to look at the vent window pillar. 12-volt Aussie Beetles ('68-on) had pillars that sloped backwards slightly. 6-volt ones were perfectly vertical.

Joel - August 12th, 2009 at 07:20 PM

you cant see it cos theres no front on pics but ovals also have different shaped windscreens to 58 on bugs

Phil, ive got a mate in bolivia who owns one of those brazilian bugs
its a real oddball
only 70s bug ive ever seen that has a factory manual choke
its got a 6 volt dash like early 60s aus bugs but it has a vynil skin over it but nothing like normal padded dashes

looks like a 6 volt body with a 1968 engine cover and rear valance. 1962-67 tail lamps...
the color makes it look all wrong...
If I was buying, I'd be measuring the side windows... lol
No chassis number given either...

I just remembered it was a 1972 chassis....!!

Yer i belive it's a genuine oval but it definitely has had the rear apron changed to the later model one for the decklid to fit. I actulay like the look of that i think the oval looks good with that later apron and decklid and 60s tail lights.

Dylan - you're insane ;)

Funnily enough - this is just what I'm looking for - perfect v-rod doner - but not at $4K
