I've jus been offered a 76 cali imported beetle vert thata never been on the road. Very long story but they had it brought over then sold it as they
had money troubles to alady who has had it sitting for over 2 years now. right now its not running( electrical) but its very very honest. paints faded
(red) but nothing a buff wouldnt bring back. no rust at all (been all underneath) and to be honest i would say a couple of hours work to get running
again (intection engine).
my questions are...
one... how hard will it be to get complience( left hand drive still)
two.... whats it worth roughly...
cheers..
steff..........
The biggest thing you will need is the import approval documentation. Without that, you can't register it. The owners (or previous owner) should
have that. LHD is no problem as it is old enough to not need conversion. You may need to speak to the transport people about things like headlights
being changed to RHD versions, seat belts, parking lights and yellow indicator lenses.

ok got more of the story now.
The current owner is the only owner its ever had. they brought the car brand new in America in 76. They moved here in 78 bringing the car with
them.
It has NEVER been put on the road here. they used it for a few months when they first got here in 78 and got busted driving un unreg'd car so it was
put up on blocks in a dry shed untill 2006 when they split up and the wife took the car. ( i missunderstoad the owner when she first was telling the
story and thought she brought it then).
She has spoken with main roads, and some motoring whatever in the ACT that have both told her that as long as she can prove ownership(she can and fill
out a LS somthign form) and that as its been here so long there should be no issues gettign it reg'd.
Tommorow i am going to take soem picutre, this car is so clean and tidy its unreal. The paint has paded but it can be saved , the inside is mint with
only the hoodlining saggin but not marked/holed in any way. The roof fold with ease,windows/door all open close as they should. The rear seats been
retrimed as it got a hole(rodent chewed it ) so it would need to be redone to original specs but it looks great so maybe it wouldnt be worth it.
I am hopfully going to pull it into the workshop over the next couple of days to work out why it wont start, electrics are beign blamed(as said rodent
that got the seat)
The lady who owns it is totaly pissed off and over it all, i am not sure of the hassles to get it roadworthed and sort are so i have NO idea on what
to offer. If it was a right hand drive i would dive in feet first but i have seen people have so many dramas with mainroads i dotn want to get caught
out as i am sure no one does..
steff.,.....
forgot to say she never had an " import approval documentation"
steff............
among any otherelectrical things stopping it from going, the injectors will be blocked after all those years.
The agency that approves the import is in Canberra so it is probably them that would issue the approval. If she can fill out a form and get it
registered, or at least the approval, I would be asking her to do that so it has at least some sort of official sanction. Maybe even if you offer
her the costs of her doing it as part of your offer to purchase the car from her. I would also probably call in to a transport office up here and
ask them what you need to do to transfer rego from ACT to Qld for a LHD car.
