Remember the sprite bugs?
Joel - August 20th, 2009 at 07:00 PM

ok surely out of the 1000s of members on here someone had something to do with the building of these things

there were fleets of these things made right across the world back when i was in highschool so it would have been mid 90s as part of some NBA promo thing
i cant remember why, i couldnt give a crap about basketball but they were all sold off after

in aus they were made from Lbugs pulled from wrecking yards, but ive seen standard bugs in the US
they had esky/icechests in the front for....sprite ofcourse... and a basketball hoop thing mounted on the backand from memory some sort of air ride in the back so they could bounce....

i dunno how many were made in aus but theres been 2 on ebay in the last 6 months
one was still in pretty good nick and just had the ball roof removed but the one on there now is pretty trashed but looks to be still intact exceot for the rear hoop

if it was closer id grab it just for the rack and peanut front end and empis :dork:

colonel mustard - August 20th, 2009 at 07:37 PM

wow.... lots of rust... scary roof.

Never seen it before. crazy stuff.

bajachris88 - August 20th, 2009 at 07:47 PM

its like.... a vee dub for the cone heads

silver - August 20th, 2009 at 07:50 PM

I made them!
I made 6 of them for sprite around 97-8
Steve Muller got the gig and prepped the cars, I made the roof which was soft urethane like a basketball and made the hoops which extended to 10' there were Bose outdoor speakers in the rear quarters and a ice chest under the bonnet they were funky
I cant believe the urethane has held up for so long let alone the vinyl stickers
It will be bitch to get the ball off I used about 2 litres of araldite to glue them on lol
it was a good job.

Joel - August 20th, 2009 at 08:50 PM

i knew there'd have to be someone on here with a connection to them

the other that sold a few months ago had the roof removd but still had all the original sprite livery

Bizarre - August 20th, 2009 at 08:57 PM

WOW....................i thought that they just pumped them full of gas and put a heat gun to the roof :dork:

You learn something every day

You thinking of doing this to yours Joel??

Joel - August 20th, 2009 at 09:07 PM

as someone on ebay asked: did that happen to the roof when the doors were slammed?

yeah just trying to find out how much sprite advertising will pay me

might stop the cats sleeping on the roof

beetleboy88 - August 20th, 2009 at 09:17 PM

heck yeh! that one on ebay is just 30 mins drive away from where i live!! might have to go and have a look and update you guys on how it looks??

We did routine maintenance at Volksrestore for a few years on the Brisbane cars, there were a few in each state I thought.

Kombi_Rescue - August 21st, 2009 at 07:09 PM

The story goes......Muller & Muller were selected to build 10 bugs that were loosley based on a US idea. We slected L bugs[1303's] due to the fact the spare wheel could be removed and converted to an ice chest. The rear bumper was then modified to accept a basketball hoop...for those slam dunks. Both rtear windows were removed and made into speaker pods that were waterproof. The colour was that from a sprite drink can, Cooltop peakhust were selected to prefrom this job, finally Wayne from silver surfer productions was choosen to preform the roof structure .....a lot of head banging took place on the whole build program.....but I have to say what a blast and look back with fond memories on what we created cheers steve muller

How bout that, another one on ebay.

This one is missing the stickers and has had a colourful new roof paintjob by the looks and back windows fitted

silver - July 26th, 2012 at 06:21 PM

that roof has lasted 12 years I am very surprised, with the UV i thought that the urethane would have turned to Goo by now........... a testimony to my skills

Joel - December 7th, 2012 at 02:50 PM

And another one...

This may be the one that was up several years back with the roof and basketball hoop on the back bumper gone.

Certainly not the only one left though...
