quick question on rims
beetleboy88 - August 26th, 2009 at 03:38 PM

Hey guys just wanting to get your opinion on a quote i just got for some rims. the rims are stock rims that originally came with the 73 superbeetle....15" rims. have attached a picture to show you what im going on about (the rim on the right with the 4 bolt holes) the quote i have recieved is $180 each + GST and $90 freight charge to Cairns. what are your thoughts?? dont know if its just me but i thought it seemed a bit expensive for 4 stock standard rims

Bizarre - August 26th, 2009 at 03:44 PM

Are they chrome??

Sounds about right

Postage is probably per wheel box.
Cheapest option is Aussie post
2 wheels to a box.
Doubt a shop is going to go to that sort of bother

beetleboy88 - August 26th, 2009 at 03:56 PM

yeh chrome/stainless im pretty sure

colonel mustard - August 26th, 2009 at 04:26 PM

Well, if you want chrome ones, that what you want... right? where is that quote from? what size are they? (15x4.5 or 5.5??) - people on here can help you, but you need to be more specific than that.

If your after just something to throw on there, make a wanted post in the parts section of this forum, maybe someone close to you has what you need....

beetleboy88 - August 26th, 2009 at 04:33 PM

15 x 5 on the front and 15 x 6 on the rear. quote is from vintage vee dub. And yes i know micks motors is in QLD and closer to me but he hasnt emailed me back yet. Dont really want chrome....gonna paint them the same colour as the car so.....

Pumba - August 26th, 2009 at 04:46 PM

Postage is over the top,im getting a set of rims sent from the gold coast to nsw south coast and its costing me $45,thats why i dont ring vintage???

vw54 - August 26th, 2009 at 05:07 PM

$180 per rim for chrome sounds right

check out the price yourself at the locl chrome platers plus cutting the rims apart to chrome and then rewelding back together again

Postage to Cairns would be double that of the gold Coast

If you dont want chrome then ask for the painted ones i think there cheaper does Micks have any rims is the otehr question

colonel mustard - August 26th, 2009 at 05:41 PM

Ring Micks, he can take a few days to reply emails, and sometimes emails just to arrive, get lost or all that stuff.

As VW54 says, ask if they have non painted ones... or even risk second hand ones....

alien8 - August 26th, 2009 at 07:18 PM

yep ring micks they have rims.
classic vw is pretty unbeatable on price for most stuff to.

beetleboy88 - August 26th, 2009 at 07:25 PM

yeh will ring micks tomorrow when i get home from work. usually get my stuff from classic but George says that he is out of stock on those rims i want :( . Sorry for posting this in this section, just thought $180 is a bit extravagant (maybe cause they are chrome??) i was hoping to pay around 100-120 per rim for just standard stainless steel stock rims.

vw54 - August 26th, 2009 at 07:50 PM

just standard stainless steel stock rims.

If you were wanting STAINLESS then you will be paying HEAPS more

they aint made in stainless

you mean just stock steel rims ????? to be painted

how wide do u want

colonel mustard - August 26th, 2009 at 07:52 PM

Stock rims, are just steel. they rust. Oh, they rust! :)

grumble - August 26th, 2009 at 08:09 PM

Powdercoating is a good alternative, its tough, looks good and doesn't rust

beetleboy88 - August 26th, 2009 at 08:58 PM

yeh i was looking at powder coating them but not sure if there are any powdercoater's up here :( didn't know stainless would cost more than chrome! my rims at the moment have some rust on them which is why i want new rims and then i want to paint/powdercoat them the same colour as my car to match. dont really car how wide but would like wider tyres than i have at the moment (165) but i know i need to fit some thinner springs first but all that can come later.

Anthiron - August 26th, 2009 at 11:17 PM

why dont u look in the phone book for a powdercoater. then take in your rims and get them sand blasted and coated in your favorite colour for approx 40 per rim and save yourself some money.

stainless stock rims dont exist, so dont bother.

one more time NO ONE make stainless steel rims

If you puchase Chrome plated rims they will have to be stripped of chrome at the electroplaters
in order to be either painted or powder coated or it wont bond and will peal off

beetleboy88 - August 27th, 2009 at 04:10 PM

well i just rang micks and ordered 4 new chrome rims (5.5 wide) and $10 cheaper than vintage vee dub :) and also much cheaper postage :) just hope everything works out painting/powdercoating wise. he said they will have to be etched up to be painted. Do you guys know if powdercoaters can match the colour of the car?? like easy with paint cause they just use the same paint from the car but how do powdercoaters go at it?? do they just match it by eye or can they actually get the same colour?? thanks for all your help guys ;)

Anthiron - August 28th, 2009 at 11:42 AM

why on earth would you buy chrome rims when you are just going to paint them?

colonel mustard - August 28th, 2009 at 12:01 PM

$170 for a steelie?? :O

beetleboy88 - August 28th, 2009 at 03:15 PM

didnt want chrome but that is all they had :(. would have loved to just get plain old rims but no one F***en has them!! so am getting chrome. will see how they look when i get them but at the moment im still thinking strip the chrome off and paint them up. yeh i know! $170 for a steelie! 180 at vintage!

alien8 - August 28th, 2009 at 07:58 PM

Damn mate, ya should of put a wanted add up here first. A nice person could of even had them powder coated for you and shipped for a lot less than $170/rim.

AVD is a great resource and puts people with the same interest in touch. Just saying.
I actually have 4 stud rims and could of done this for you no problemo.
Have a good one mate.

Klaus - August 28th, 2009 at 08:52 PM

yeah you'd be suprised how many stock rims some of us have;)

amazeer - August 28th, 2009 at 09:56 PM

anyone who thinks $90 is too much to post 4 wheels from sydney to cairns is a trippa. $9.40 + $1.95/kg each.
Sounds pretty close to the mark to me.

You'd also be surprised at how much some people on here would charge you for an old stock rim.

I'm after some wide 5 4x15's. Dont care what the paint is like, so long as they dont have bubbles of rust. In southern sydney/Wollongong/shoalhaven area.

amazeer - August 28th, 2009 at 10:01 PM

I guess you could tape the boxes into 2 pairs and save a little bit.

beetleboy88 - August 29th, 2009 at 10:52 AM

thanx for the let down guys :( i know i coulda put a AD up but i really did want new ones with no signs of rust at all. if i need anything else i will chuck up a add next time!!
