What year model car?
Could be something simple under the nose cone, if the hockey stick has jumped out.
This can be done in the car, if you hold your tongue right,
but much easier when removng the whole thing.
...and is cause by wear, so may happen again sooner than later.
But it sounds like the crunching is telling you it is time to get it done.
Do a search on this and other forums' tech section to get your self familiar with the terminology, and bugets fro reco or second han units.

Early shift couplers had tie wire through the clamp bolts.

Why would it cost hundred to get it towed if you live in newcastle???? We have had cars towed from morisset to Maryland and Maryland to Maitland and
it didn't cost hundreds. And even Belmont from Maitland.

i go along with rose,I can get one towed to taree for that sort of money.A tilt tray is much cheaper option than totally destroying the unit and that lets the mechanic check out the problem whether it is internal or linkages..
Won't cost hundreds for 17k Adam, however if you can find a tow vehicle I can get a trailer to take it there, probably a freebie though we would have
to make all the arrangements in advance. Give me a call if it suits.

17 kms isn't far at all just put it into 2nd gear and drive it there early one morning or late one night so you don't have to worry about the
traffic.
Or a tow truck wont charge much at all probably around $50

17km's is not far. your lucky it wasnt 100km's from your house. get it fixed and hope it doesnt happen again.

I'm sure the tow truck driver will know exactly where it is as I bet he has towed heaps of vw's there

um... 68 on 67 pan...? thats crazy stuff mate... strange.
I say he would be right as they know there stuff.
