Anyone bought from cip1.com ?
vwfastback - October 21st, 2009 at 01:58 AM

Hi,

I have been talking to cip1, (California Import Products) about buying a few goodies.

Went to do the transaction, and sent a form asking for copies of my drivers licence, and full copies of front and back of credit card.

Now there is no way I am going to send that over the net. That is asking for it to be drained.

I am hesitent to fax this also. Same reasons.

Has anyone dealt with them before? Is this standard practice for them? I have never seen such behaviour before.

Regards,

James C.

I have never use them directly but many people I know have, and were happy.
I am sure they just used the on-line ordering and that was all.
No licence and CC faxes as far as I know.
I would not do that either.

have used cip before and had to send same items listed. Part of their security for orders from overseas buyers I think to stop scammers with stolen credit card numbers. Watch postage its a killer!

DaveCarter - October 21st, 2009 at 07:20 AM

Yeah like half my car is from them. They are just very security conscious but great customer service. When buying rubber sets for both my car and my dads the sent a warning that we were buying two of the same thing. They also have a wish list so you can throw things in while you wait for the dollar. And postage is calculated on the site so you can find out the cheapest combo of things to post

Mick058 - October 21st, 2009 at 07:25 AM

i'm thinking of getting a Rhino case from these guys.

Bizarre - October 21st, 2009 at 07:37 AM

matberry - October 21st, 2009 at 08:10 AM

Nothing but good here too. But never asked for that security stuff though. Quicker to get to me than most southern state deliveries, and frieght charges very reasonable, about 1/3 the cost of CB Performance frieght.

bajachris88 - October 21st, 2009 at 08:12 AM

i used them before!

but i neva had to send that stuff! and that was like only 4 weeks ago.

When did they incorporate all the security?

Hi

Great to deal with, I was asked to fax credit card etc, I just scanned them and sent them as a jpeg.

Thanks all,

Like Adam, I am keeping it under the $1k limit. I found the freight to be good, once you are over a certain volume. Kind of like a cab, there is a nasty freefall to start, but the increments are good.

I just looked on there and it appears to be an great site. let us know how you go with paying/ordering/shipping :)

vwfastback - October 21st, 2009 at 01:17 PM

I will let you know.

I have recently bought from CB, Jaycee,aircooled.net as well as Jegs.

This is by far the strangest one I have had to deal with. The customer service on questions though has been fast and efficent.

colonel mustard - October 21st, 2009 at 01:30 PM

:O what sort of project have you got going on sir!!!

The main thing i like about cip is that alll the prices are on there!! (i like buying local, but when they make it hard to know prices, and you have to call, and get no answer, and no email answers + the extra cost... you start going elsewhere)..

My list has come to like $750 US just to get my super going superly.... :S

Scarab - October 21st, 2009 at 01:59 PM

I guess now is the time to check out places like this with the dollar riding so high!

Might get on board too and order some stuff for the Notch

colonel mustard - October 21st, 2009 at 02:03 PM

Careful paul..... its a scary place once you start making a list! I could spend $1000 in one go, just on bits and pieces, parts that no one would notice had even been touched. scary.

Camo - October 21st, 2009 at 02:41 PM

Not sure if it is for all buyers or just previous buyers, but they have a 15% off sale at the moment. So you can actually get things cheaper than what they are advertising. But you still have to pay shipping which is great compared to CB Performance.

I went through all the security stuff and that was over a year and a half ago.

I have purchased thousands of dollars worth of parts from them over the last few years (all under 1k at a time LOL). Service is always excellent and descriptions always accurate. I have NEVER had any trouble dealing with them. I use paypal whenever I use them so did not have to send my details to them.

I get my parts faster than if I bought them interstate and can shop when I want to. If only local suppliers would set up a proper website like this, I could then keep the money in Australia but none of them seem interested in this business they are missing out on.

vwfastback - October 22nd, 2009 at 06:53 AM

paperwork completed, Lets see how this goes.

vwfastback - October 22nd, 2009 at 09:34 AM

Interestingly enough, they deducted from my credit card 3 days before they got the paperwork that was "required".

Never let process get in the way of cash.

Mick058 - October 26th, 2009 at 07:10 PM

ordered my Rhino case on thursday, came today, paid via paypal -very very good!

Camo - October 30th, 2009 at 11:56 AM

Still very happy with CIP and their 15% off until tomorrow. Just bought 32 separate items, some only very small (35 Cents each) and bigger items (1 x $215, 2 x $170) and a lot of $10 items. The thing is, with the 15% off you get it at less than their advertised price. Anyway, just spent about $900 worth and am very happy and that includes shipping.

And like Mick058, it will be probably be here in less than a week

I placed an order on Monday, I'm not worried about the CC and Driver lic as I faxed them. I beleive the delivery will be Tuesday next week as they gave me the Freight Details and expected date. The process of buying from them is too easy. With the exchange rate 92c and they have been running an October deal that expires tomorrow night (15% off orders over $200) I'm paying dollar for dollar against the US and it chips into some of the freight too.

DaveCarter - October 30th, 2009 at 04:59 PM

I have a fair bit of little stuff coming in from there. I think it is in honolulu now :D

grumble - October 30th, 2009 at 07:03 PM

Mate I ordered a few parts a while ago and got the same bull--it I rang American express and they informed me that none of this was necessary as it could be checked if needed,i eventually did the deal with an international money order, the parcel was then sent Fed Ex to the wrong postcode ( they swapped the 3&4 in the code and the parts went to Tamworth)and then it was a hassle trying to locate them. This was 2 transactions i.e. first & last. Be very careful with your cards.Cheers Les

eraser - October 30th, 2009 at 10:10 PM

Mmm i have grabbed a few things off them. I grabbed a flamethrower ignition coil.. that got customs all riled up, they then asked me to pay some import fee even tho i said it was a gift, and if i didnt pay it could be destroyed :P But i havent had any issues with them especially for the price.

dont want to start a flame war, just be weary of buying from Bfyobsoleteparts it took me 6 months to get the stuff i ordered after them telling me they had it in stock.

Just for security James...
You will ALSO find that MOST US suppliers will Only send to the address on Your credit card... or Paypal address..

Join Paypal.. its free... and trouble free... and SECURE...
I use it to purchase goods in china-USA-UK etc...

the first time I bought from CIP1 many years ago...
I got to the banking details..
and told them I would phone them the details.
which I did... but since Pay pal that's all I use..
excepting aircooled.net who don't use paypal..
but do use credit cards...

but there are many smaller VW shops over there that do NOT sell out of the continental USA.. and don't even want to know about Australia... lol
one such shop sold clutch and accelerator cables guaranteed for life ...

the other problem is FREIGHT Costs...
its much easier for a warehouse to ship things by courier who come and pick up the items and they have secure air freight
which comes at a VERY HIGH Premium... $$$$$$$$$$

there are some US shops/warehouses that will send by post UPS which is a bit cheaper [but takes forever to arrive] and then there is express post UPS which depending on weight, can be almost the same as regular post but arrives in a few days..

so, WEIGHT = $$$$$$$ in air freight...

but then the parts - and many are made in the USA - are so cheap.. and the quality is excellent...

LEE

PS: James,
My Austar [like FOXTEL] bill is taken out of My credit card account each month..
about 18 months the federal police fraud squad rang Me asking if I was in Queensland and had taken large sums of money from My credit card... I said No to both..
I did get my money back after a month or so... lol
so, buying overseas is probably safer then buying from Australia .. lol cheers LEE
What You could do is open a credit card account with a low amount and use only for buying overseas..??

the banks are very good at fixing these things now... Lee
