Good place to go camping?
pete wood - November 11th, 2009 at 08:47 AM

Got a week of hols next week and really need to get out of the rat race for a few days so I'm gonna take the young fella (3yo) camping for a few days. Looking for somewhere not too far away (3 hrs drive or so) that's good for camping, a bit of light offroad and not too far from civilization. We did Wombeyan caves 2 months back, so looking for somewhere different.

Any ideas?

Not sure if Blowering Dam is within that 3 hour radius, but I go there
alot for camping/ skiing. There are some good tracks there and oh, the serenity!

There is a top place called Turon Gates

http://turongates.com/camp.html

It is north of Lithgow on the Mudgee road

There is a back way to Sofala which is a great 4 wheel drive track

Check it out Pete - reckon it is what you are after with the kids

wategan forest, back of Wyong/Newcastle, reach via F3/ or via Wisemans Ferry.

Lots of dirt roads, plenty of 'off-road' tracks the local Nissan/Toyota 4WD heroes love and designated camping grounds if you require them.

And if it all turns to shite, you're only 30 mins from civilisation, shops, beaches or whatever a 3-yo wants!

Jenolan Caves.....great driving roads, lots of day trip places to go to...and the camping site which is located about 2k's before the arch (Sydney side) is excellent.

There is plenty of tracks to explore around Kanagra Walls etc.

For ankle biters you won't find a better place than Myal Lakes, about the edge of your 3 hours but brilliant for the little fellas, almost always calm water, shallow for heaps from the shore, good fishing and a fair few light off road tracks. Highly recomended.
