356
matberry - November 16th, 2009 at 11:14 PM

Nice car arrived at my workshop last week. Not vw but has a lot of dub bits.

It's a 1959 356A. I'm doing some engine and suspension repairs.
Beautifully restored 19 years ago.

polak - November 18th, 2009 at 07:48 PM

sweet 356 mat, not a fan of porsches in general but always had a soft spot for the 356

STIDUB - November 18th, 2009 at 08:02 PM

ahh, ive been wondering what happened to that, drove past it alot on my way to work awhile back but havent seen for 6months or so, looks better in daylight as you roll past than in pics, give the owner my thumbs up, especially for actually using it as a car!

Nah mate, the owner of this one loves it for it's originality. Altho she's only done 5000km since resto/engine build, there are a few issues with the heads to rectify.
The owner is talking of getting a high performance version built similar to this outlaw that was sold recently in Sydney.

Yeah mate, cars need to be used, this one is very loved. Certainly looks the biz in the flesh.

reub - November 18th, 2009 at 10:33 PM

:tu:
I still can't understand the $$'s these things are pulling... Not sure I've met a VW owner who doesn't lust after a 356.
I'm amazed how the little 1600 pulls easily to 6500 rpm too.

matara - November 19th, 2009 at 08:40 AM

Is that the one from Melbourne that was lead wiped and file finished by hand! If so the person that got it, got a bargain. That thing will be solid as!

Cheers

Steve

matberry - November 19th, 2009 at 11:44 AM

matara, maybe, I know its from Vic and have seen pics of a BEAUTIFUL bare metal hand filed body job, as I said in the first post it was 19 years ago, (resto began in 1984!).

chickenfillet, That's the outlaw that got this guy going after I had been in his ear about some horsepower, he would have bought it week before last, but it had just sold.

colonel mustard - November 19th, 2009 at 04:11 PM

I Have a 250km/h version of that sitting on my desk not 2 foot away.... I keep thinking about adapting it to fit the dub....

I love 356's... Especially when they are being driven properly!

Classic always gets a good turnout of them...

Those damn 50's Porsche engineers and their narrow beams.
Love an early 356's 'natural' tuck.....like warm apple pie.
What a beautiful car!

P.S. I bought that Outlaw from CTS......then I woke up all hot and sweaty.
That is the ultimate dream IMHO, pure gold!

just leave it with keys up the road if you run outta space there mate ;)

karmannghia60 - November 23rd, 2009 at 11:33 AM

Yeah, that outlaw is the one from Melb. The panel work was done at Ryan's panelshop, Classic Resto. Ryan is on this forum. I believe the T4 engine was done by VolksPower

Hmm funny you say local engine, all the blurb I've seen (two different journo articles) say it's an engine built by the "legendary" Bernie Bergman, 2.4, I assumed type one, pics look type one too.
Ryan must be Hellbus....beautiful work from what we've seen here.

vwsteve - November 24th, 2009 at 07:26 AM

Heres the one i have lying around downstairs

matberry - November 24th, 2009 at 10:57 PM

Mmmmmm. Very nice Steve. Read green with envy.

karmannghia60 - November 25th, 2009 at 10:28 AM

No, Ryan is not Hellbus
Definitely was a T4 built by VolksPower when it was in Melbourne. I recall clearly because I spoke to the owner about how they had to modify the underside of the decklid to provide enough clearance for the fan. Maybe they replaced the engine after that
