Just out of curiousity whats the most heat an engine (1916cc) could get before it gets dangerous.
On the weekend 40+deg didnt seem right to take out the bug.any info muchas gracias
depends what temp your oil gets to
Anything above 125C - 130C is shut down time
I took mine out on the 40 deg day, and it was running around 90 deg with ordinary traffic driving...then at around 110-115deg with more aggresive
driving (flogging)
Depends on the oil you use.......but if you get up to 130deg, DO NOT SHUT DOWN.....just slow down your pace, make sure the motor is revving but not
loaded (revs keeps the fan spinning) so the motor can cool down via the fan.
I know of some rally beetles that sit on 140-150deg oil temp all day !
cool thanks guys.i think i might get one of those external oil coolers put on the bug just to be on the safe side.engines arnt cheap these days.
hey one more Question whats the correct oil for mild 1916.
thanks guys
i use penrite hpr 30 on my 1916, I like it.

i notised a lot of castrol edge bottles at Stan's when i was last there
I've started using Ace and am very happy. Alot of customer engines seem happier using it over Castrol that I was using.

So how do you know if the oil is working well (and how well) till it does cause a problem, and how would you identify the oil as the cause of any
problem, is there a way of knowing if one oil works better than another, other than comparing engine wear on two identical motors worked in identical
ways over a given period? Many years ago I had an old HK, I put KMart oil in that for years and when I sold it it was still running well (as well as a
HK could ) it had around 350,000 klicks on it by then more than 300,000
of them while I had it. This post isn't to claim KMart oil is as good or worse than any other oil just to ask from the educated how you can tell.
PS. These days I don't use the cheap stuff in the dub engine, my pocket can now stretch to the "good stuff"
vw don't come with temp gauges so who knows.
if you own any old car and you dont drive to the condition you will kill it sooner or later.
Don if you change your oil every 3000Ks.
you should be ok cause as you said its cheap 20/50 is ok.
Valvoline, you know what I mean.
10w 30 here.
