1973 Superbug servicing
Superbug73 - November 27th, 2009 at 09:12 PM

Hello fellow VW lovers

I have recently purchased my dream car - 73 Superbug - however am finding it difficult to have simple things - such as breaks repaired - as no mechanic will commit or offer a small fortune. A further problem being that I am a university student and my finances are scarce. Does anyone know about some place or someone who is able to help me. As I said this is my dream car and I would be crushed if I had to sell it for this reason.

Hi
It would help if you put down where you live in your profile.

You are right - that would help - sorry about that

73 Supers rock! Congrats on the purchase ;) I just had mine fully resprayed and all the rust removed. It now looks like new! Enjoy the ride and the looks you will receive :)

hi
You need to go ONLY to a VW mechanic...

many will have used spare parts which will save you money...

best of luck

brakes for your bug cost the same as a modern car
you don't use used brake parts
if you don't want to park your car half way up a tree:crazy:
cars cost money to repair.
and if your car is 36 years old Id say that your brake system may need a overhaul:fakesniff:

thanks for the replies! I have tried looking for a VW mechanic but have so far had no luck! I am too afraid to "repair" the breaks on my own because I don't want the car to become a tree hugger.

Hi

Maybe a local Perth guy can tell you who is around your area.

Get the VW guy to check the car over and prioritise what needs to be done, safety stuff at the top of the list.

Sorry if this is obvious, but do you have any of the many repair/mod manuals for Beetles (such as Haynes manual) as they're very descriptive and may help you out with these soughts of things. Also chances are they're may be a thread on this (brake servicing?) in the Tech Corner forum. Hope this helps :tu:

ANY brake place should be able to fix your car easily.............for god sake its just pads/shoes, machine disc and drums, and replace wheel cylinders if required...not exactly rocket science for them and it certainly doesn't need a "vw expert".

Machine discs= Same as any car to do...probably $40 to $60 for both
Machine Drums= Same as any car to do....probably same as above
Front Pads= around $50-$80 ?? (if you need new calipers you can get them for around $200 or less for a pair new)
Rear Shoes= prob same cost as pads
Wheel cylinders= $50 each x 2
Then add fluid for about $20-$40........and around 2 hours labour.

Additional costs would be master cylinder, and hoses.

I don't know where I heard this but I didn't think T1 drums could be machined. Sorry, shouldn't rather than couldn't . Is this bs? Id be pretty happy if they can cause my rear drums need some attention.

Craig Torrens - November 29th, 2009 at 03:09 PM

Yes they can be machined, just depends on how worn out they are........New ones a relatively cheap as well.
