I've been told that some of the new cars have the air conditioning compressors driven by a 12 volt electric motor..
I haven't been able to find any info on this..
and whether it IS true???

Prius do so the A/C can run without the petrol engine going but they run off the cars main battery which is over 200volts DC

Hi
I cant see why you couldn't have a 12 volt motor connected to a compressor, maybe it would suck a lot of juice. The huge compressors that used to be
fitted to VW systems have been replaced now with much smaller units with more efficient units so packaging on VW is a bit easier.

Lee, have a look into sleep cab systems, some trucks use 24V ones. When I was looking a while ago I found some for campers that ran 12V. If I find the
links I'll post em up.

thanks for that
as placing an even very small SANDEN air con compressor into a VW engine bay is a big headache...
I've had the compressor for 3 years ...lol
thought about running it off the rear axlle...
now that would be adventive.. lol
pulley on IRS rear axle - compressor mounted to the swing arm - so the compressor and pulley stay the same distance apart... lol
as Most of My VW driving is on the highway... COOL.... lol

I haven't checked any of this out as yet... just dreaming....lol
