Craig S - December 16th, 2009 at 09:15 PM

I know I've already read about this somewhere, but hadn't seen photos of the salvage before (here's hoping the link works):

I hope this guy has LOTS of money.

God ,people have found splitys in the most unusual places over the years. What were they thinking pushing it into the drink!!

Phil74Camper - December 18th, 2009 at 09:46 AM

There's at least one split window Kombi on the bottom of Sydney Harbour, near Gladesville Bridge. It belonged to a builder who was making a delivery to the bridge construction site in the early 1960s. Apparently he didn't apply the handbrake and the Kombi rolled off the bridge and into the harbour - the access is pretty steep.

I imagine it would be buried in mud and silt now - you would need some pretty special magnetic imaging equipment to find it. And even if you did, there would not be much left after 45 years in salt water.

There is a lot of army equipment dumped on the harbour floor just inside North Head. I have dived it before - you can float down and sit in a Jeep on the bottom, some 15-20 metres down.

I read this article on a differen forum (can't find the link). Apparently the gearbox packed up so the owner pushed it into a Fjord which apparently was the thing to do with old cars........Wonder what else might be in the Fjords over there.

theres a 54 beetle down in the same spot apparently

kinda sad that people are resorting to this for projects
25 years ago sambas were just another junk vw, there in junk yards all over in the US

i was chatting with Al at stokers siding about it the other day

he waas telling me just down the road is 5 splits in a paddock.
the land owner wanted to divert run off away from his shed so he used a bunch of splits for a dam wall

probably mad people out there that would try and save them

i know alot of people that would love to save that 54 oval in lake Koenigssee. shame that noones allowed to

Hi

When I was lad lots of people tried to give me Ovals for free, but I was more interested in 40 hp bugs, I even used to see them just dumped on the streets. A friend had an Oval at Punchbowl with a push button starter that he wanted me to take away.

Just goes to show you, todays derelict car is tomorrows classic.

These people who get all swoony over split window Kombis, have they actually driven one.

The prices of Splits in the UK is mad, rotters needing alot of work can fetch around £8000, even Bay window buses are commanding high prices now. I've owned a couple of Bays & personally think they're a better van, but at today's prices I wouldn't buy one. I guess it's nice to see on old VW saved but within reason, this seems a bit drastic.

yes possibly. I have seen a few people spend 30k restoring VN's

a full set of VN calais window mounds and rubbers costs $2500.

$250 for 4 whether strips that got on top of the door for VN-VP executive.

No joke the VN-VR are one of the more expensive cars to restore to factory condition.

Stupid I know

I drive a VP vacationer which is only one of 11,000 made and its worth ??? 1000 buks if I am lucky. but if I part it I could easily get 3500 for the parts lol.

Its funny how the car market works.

Any suggestions of a new car? ( 95 and below only)
