new type 1 bodies
vwrallycar - July 3rd, 2003 at 09:01 PM

i have seen in the Volksworld mags that you can buy new type 1 bodies and motors and so on, so does anyone know if we can buy these bodies here in australia.?
now i remember back in 1996 seeing a new one in a vw shop in Sydney, as well as 2 NEW type 2 twin cab ute bodies in crates out the back!( i dont remember the shop name)
surely someone here has seen these or knows of this.
please let me know
cheers
Andrew

Yeah - there is a few still available.
A friend of the V Force boys have one. I "believe" he got it from Thurman Eng?

Looks real nice. No rust, totally straight

wow thats cheap!!! they arent supers though are they, theyre the late beam front end type?

now I'm REALLY wondering if I shouldnt grab one of these and change the front to struts instead of continuing to patch up mine...

vw54 - July 15th, 2003 at 09:11 AM

No the bodies fit a Torsion Bar front end chassis and floorpan.

Secoh - July 15th, 2003 at 09:38 AM

thats what I thought. :( still, might be worth my while converting one to strut! you cant beat brand new! :D

Be just the ticket if you had a rusty '71 or '75!

are they R&P? thats the other thought.

Mind you I could just phone them and ask and stop bothering you lot :D

Peter Leonard - July 15th, 2003 at 08:16 PM

and then post your findings here for everybody :D

is it tough to do a LH to RH conversion? would love to have a new body. and a new vw shell would be great too. mines twisted and warped and rusted and stuff, but does anyone know if the quality is okay? thinner steel... missing bolts.. missing paint....
also wondering about the paint quality (is it going to rust quietly away out of sight faster than my old 71 is now...?)
mucho interest here..
might have to call them up myself..
let us know what you discover, secoh :D

Secoh - July 17th, 2003 at 04:08 PM

OK, here is the lowdown (just phoned them).

They are only in the gunmetal blue.

They are LHD which involves drilling the hole for the column and cutting and shutting a RHD dash panel in place.

They will suit a '68 to '71 german floor pan and are the torsion bar front end chassis.
they come with doors, boot and bonnet but no trim, no glass etc etc are otherwise totally bare.

They are $3650 + GST (I dont know where the figure of $1700 came from then!!).

Hope this helps anyone that was thinking of one. :)

Are you saying I'm a liar or making it up???? I JUST PHONED THEM AND ASKED!!!

any other information must be for someone super special because thats the price they gave me, and is consistent with what Ben mentioned when he told me about them a year ago.

I forgot to ask about these. whoever it was on the phone was pretty blunt and didnt encourage much conversation.

I suspect that because the kombis have a monococque construction that it would have to be registered as a new vehicle, which means it would have to comply with all current ADR's. impossible for a kombi to do. :(

be fine for something unregistered like a racer or offroader though.

No sorry not saying that at all, He must have given me a special priceing, dont know for sure, maybe it was someone else in the shop that quoted.

Any way the point of the story is that there still there and would save a lot of time n effort, but there would also be some tricks in finding all the right stuff to put them together.

Secoh - July 21st, 2003 at 08:44 AM

no worries :) yeah who knows. maybe if you ask different people there you get different answers but it sounds like it'd be worth badgering them about it.

save a lot of effort for someone doing up a '69 for sure. no good to me as it's to much effort to change the front end to suit my strut setup.
