Australian car sales figures for 2009 have been released today.

Volkswagen sold 30,087 vehicles in Australia in 2009, an increase of 212 vehicles over the 29,875 sold in 2008. This is an increase of 0.7% in what has been a difficult financial year for many companies.

2009 was VW's second-highest ever selling year in Australia, and only the second time ever that VW has sold 30,000 or more vehicles per year here. Only 1964, when VW's Clayton manufacturing plant was operating, was larger - 31,419. VW finished as Australia's best selling European brand for the fifth year in a row.

The overall sales results were:

1. Toyota 200,991 (down by 15.9%)
2. Holden 119,568 (down by 8.3%)
3. Ford 96,501 (down by 7.8%)
