Yep. Round headlights on Kombis up to '88. I guess it could have had the headlights and grille updated, but '83 models were also air-cooled, so they will not have the lower grille that the '84 and on Wasserboxers have.

Can you find out the VIN? That's a foolproof way to check the year model. Check the 10th digit of the 17-digit VIN - that's the year model:

A=1980 B=1981 C=1982 D=1983 E=1984 F=1985 G=1986 H=1987 J=1988 K=1989 L=1990 M=1991 N=1992 P=1993 ..... etc.

Or you can plug the entire VIN into a converter such as http://www.cybertects.co.uk/scirocco/vincheck.php  which will give extra info on what model type, what factory it was made, etc etc.
