Ideas for VW events
Phil74Camper - March 23rd, 2010 at 09:47 AM

OK here is where we want to hear your ideas for some VW events we can run in future.

A few posters have said they didn't like the Flat Four Supercruise, or that it should have been done differently, or that there isn't much happening compared with, say, the Mini car club. That may or may not be the case; but let's see what we can do about it.

Let's hear what YOU would like to see happen.

Club Veedub tries to have at least one 'event' each month, whether that be one of our own organising, or going to another club's runs (such as Flat Four's). Our calendar of coming events - five months in advance - is here:

http://www.clubvw.org.au/Coming%20events.htm

To start us off:

1. I was thinking of another 'Fish n Chips' signpost run in winter. Meet at a certain place (eg petrol station), get instructions, follow the directions and answer questions as you proceed. Finish at nice coastal location near fish n chips shop, trophies for 1st 2nd, 3rd. Any suggestions?

2. I was also thinking of hiring a proper theatrette such as the one at Hurstville Civic Centre, and showing some VW DVDs on the big screen - maybe Shape of Quality factory film from 1964, or some of the 'Bug Me' videos of how to service/rebuild your engine. We have dozens of VW DVDs in the Club library - requests welcome

3. A VW circuit day at Gary Wilmington's Marulan Test Track, say one every six months?

4. A cruise to somewhere like the go-kart track at Picton, for races, BBQ and trophies etc

Every VW event doesn't have to be 'big', but it should be enjoyable, and interesting. Do you have any suggestions? And would you be happy to help organise something?

Sounds good Ian, would be nice to go for a run there in the cooler months. Pick a date in July, do me up a flyer and it's on. We could have a Sydney starting point at say Maccas at Thornleigh, and cruise up the freeway to Doyalson and the old highway via Swansea - nice.

Not just Bugs n Buses though - we want ALL VWs to come, including the water-cooled VW guys.

This has been very successful in WA- nearly all VW Clubs/forums now participate including watercooled.

Marulan once every six months sounds good,

I got an event for later on in the year, its Chevalier Show, my school but each year they have a focus car which they judge seperately from the rest. I think that we should make it beetles this year, its on the 31st of october,

Its run by the chev p&f, here is a link to the chev website http://www.chevalier.nsw.edu.au/
Once im finished exams ill find out who to contact about it.

Only thing is they want lots of the focus car so maybe more then just club vee dub.

As for other ideas maybe a dyno day in sydney or near but not to far seen as thought its club vee dub syd.

t_tuffnut - March 23rd, 2010 at 03:29 PM

My Dad is starting up a mobile drive in service (He's a member on the forum - Drive_in) and already has a huge inflatable screen, projection equipment as well as some retro speakers (From old drive ins) as well as a broadcast system (for fm radios) that he can set up.

We have run the system a number of times on our property and it works a treat.

If you were interested in something like that, I could see if we could organise something. We are located on the Central Coast in NSW, but the whole kit loads into a car. We haven't a VW to bring yet (Both are off the road for work), so if you can handle us shleping our gear around in a toyota then we might be able to get something happening.

Phil74Camper - March 25th, 2010 at 07:07 AM

Yes the classic car show at Chevalier College at Bowral is a great day. We have had a VW contingent take part for the last two or three years; last year I think we had 8 VWs turn up. It would be great to have Volkswagen as the 'featured marque' but I think we would need a couple of dozen turn up, at least. You can read our report about last year's show in the Nov '09 issue of Zeitschrift - go to http://vwwatercooled.com/mag/mag/history.html  and download the November 2009 issue.

Ian and Rose put on a Dyno Day in Newcastle last year, and reports were that it was a good day. Is there enough interest in Sydney to do one? If so, anyone have any suggestions for a workshop/location to hold it?

Tuffnut that mobile drive-in idea sounds fantastic. We have often wondered about how best to show VW movies and documentaries. Blacktown is the only remaining drive-in in Sydney, and as they are owned by GU they don't take requests - they can't even notify coming attractions more than 2 weeks in advance. We can show movies/docos at our club meetings by using a laptop and boardroom projector onto the wall, and it works OK but I reckon we can do better. If we could put on a drive-in movie night somewhere, showing the 'Bug Me' DVDs of how to service/rebuild your VW engine (with BBQ), who would come along?

71-BEETLE-SEDAN - March 25th, 2010 at 10:47 AM

1303Steve - March 25th, 2010 at 04:00 PM

Hi

There is dyno day being organised on the vwwatercooled forum in Sydney on 17th April, I asked if air cooled were welcome, never got an answer.

http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum/upload/showthread.php?t=41300

Cant wait for the next fish & chip run

Steve

t_tuffnut - March 25th, 2010 at 04:02 PM

I talked to Dad about it and he's up for it. All you need is a power source and a large enough area for all the cars to park.

As a matter of fact, next weekend we are spraying up a few more speaker sets and making up a few more bases. He has a fair few of them now.

So if anyone has a bit of land, or can organise a soccer field/cricket ground to have this thing on, we'd be set.

He might have a website up already. I'll look into it and if he does I'll post the link up here.

71-BEETLE-SEDAN - March 25th, 2010 at 05:42 PM

We coulD organise a night to go to WSID maybe with another club or somethin but woUld be somethin different

beetleboy88 - March 25th, 2010 at 09:48 PM

71-BEETLE-SEDAN - March 26th, 2010 at 07:43 AM

will post up their replys.

and if were gunna do the sth highlands motorfest can we get numbers cause it would be good to be the marque car as the morris minors have done it for a couplke years now.

Gary L - March 26th, 2010 at 07:51 AM

Im up for most VW events if I can make them, my opinion is that Sunday is a better day than Saturday for events as more people work or have sporting commitments on Saturday.
I also believe we should look at where we all live Sydney is a big place
Some suggestions for sydney

1. Meet at Heathcote drive down via the cost to Wollongong Harbour Sunday morning have a brunch, swim or just look at the cars.
2. Meet at Hornsby go to Avoca beach do the same as above
3. Meet Liverpool go to Picton , Bowral Robertson have lunch
4. Meet at Penrith drive out to Windsor have lunch
5. Meet at Botanical Gardens Sydney go over the Harbour Bridge have lunch at Bamoral beach
6. Meet at Castle Hill head up to Mangrove mountain via the Wisemans ferry.
7. Meet at Watsons Bay near Doyles has a nice park go for a cruise to Bondi

Activities we could do have a swim, surf, go bowling lawn or ten pin, go carting, racing, drink beer, eat have a picnic visit a historic town it is endless
Also if you are still doing a resto and you would like to come to an event and have no car tell someone a lot of people I am sure could give you a lift

Looking forward to other ideas and discussion maybe some interstaters or country people have some suggestions how we can do more
All the best

Phil74Camper - March 26th, 2010 at 08:42 AM

Steve - I have put the Watercooled Dyno Day info in the VW Events listing, and I'll also put it in Zeitschrift. Let's make it an ALL VW event, air and water

Gary, some great ideas there. We could easily do one of those each month, would be a lot of fun.

One of the guys in our club (Norm) was going to do a Fish n Chips run later in the year - will chase that up. We could use of of Gary's routes - maybe finish at Doyles (exclusive fish n chips there!)

How can we have a VW drag event at WSID? ($$$$)

1303Steve - March 26th, 2010 at 08:51 AM

Hi

Some good ideas here.

I love taking overseas visitors to Doyles for lunch and a walk around the Gap, either drive via Bondi Beach or catch a ferry from the Quay.

Parking is always at a premium around Watsons Bay.

Its just great to get and drive your VW with like minded people.

Steve

http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=82686

so far we do the Pit Stop Cruz, last year had 50 dubs.
Newcastle dyno day, 27 dubs
trying bugs and buses by the bay
And Gunnedah drags
And Rose and I aren't a veedub club.
just a bit crazy:crazy::lol::crazy:

http://www.sydneydragway.com.au/subpage.asp?Page=Basics

Check that out, im sending an email now asking if we could save spots for us one night, is this a good idea?

Phil74Camper - March 26th, 2010 at 01:22 PM

Ian I thought you and Rose were the Club Veedub Hunter Valley chapter !

Yes a few spots for us at WSID one night would be good. If so would need a couple of months to promote it properly to get maximum turnout (water-cooled guys too), and hopefully get the VW Nationals out of the way first. So mahybe an evening in June if poss?

t1 time - March 26th, 2010 at 02:11 PM

What about meeting at a nice venue and put on a BBQ lunch then cruise thought the country side for a few hours returning to a differant place maybe a park with shelter sheds put on a few peoples choice awards and hold a raffel a good chat and then head off home.

This is not just VW - I have been given this information and asked if anyone would like to participate:

Newcastle Restored Vehicle Club Inc. - Mid Winter Wander - Sunday 20th June 2010 to Hunter Valley Gardens

Organisers are hoping to be third time lucky with the weather for the next Mid Winter Wander. The drive will begin early with a mass assembly show and shine at the Stockland Glendale Shopping Centre. Then at 9.00am the convoy of unique vehicles will set out for the award winning international tourist destination that is the Hunter Valley Gardens at Pokolbin. The scenic route will cover 80 kms through Edgeworth, Wakefield, Freeman's Waterhole and along sandy Creek Road to Millfield, then back through Bellbird, Cessnock and along Mount View Road to Hunter Valley Gardens.

Entertainment, food and wine stalls as well as children's activities such as face painting and a jumping castle, all set amongst a beautiful garden backdrop will ensure a great day out for the family.

I've mentioned this at Club VW a couple of times but I think I am expected to organise, but I am lazy.

A run from Sydney via national park down to Wollongong. Finish up at one of two locations. Wollongong lighthouse/Belmore Basin with nearby fish n chippy. is a beautiful spot but parking is a bit of a problem for a large group. You may be able to book one of the carparks through council, dont know.

The other destination option is Motorlife Museum in suburb of Dapto. Its not a huge museum and doesnt hold any VW's but plenty of interesting cars to look at. The museum can provide a gas BBQ and there are also a few public electric BBQ's and a shelter and toilets. (would need to be booked because sometimes have birthdya parties there). In August Kembla Joggers clubhouse across the road in the same park will be complete and it will have a "function room (which) will incorporate audio-visual capabilities, including a huge widescreen, projector, data points and surround sound speakers" available for hire.

Hi sounds like a great event have a friend who went to the gardens said it is fantastic they had a few wines that will help.
The event organiser believes they will have over 600 cars I would love to see a 100 VW
I will be going if I can
