Earth Hour

Who's supporting it? And if so what are you going to be doing?

I'm going to bed early as going to watch compact attact at WSID tomorrow.

I think if energy australia didn't have street lights on all night in suburbia that would save heaps.

i think its the biggest load of crap ever.

I want to know what the point of it is. If you dont need a light on, turn it off. Why wait till "Earth Hour"? Do people think having a conscience for 1 hour per year makes a difference? They sold tickets to Goat Island tonight so people could watch the lights go out in the city. People actually got in their cars, drove to the city, jumped on a ferry, went to the island, ate shitloads of fast food and disposed of the rubbish so that they could feel good about themselves? They watched some office worker walk around the buildings switching off all the unused lights. The office worker sat in the dark for an hour and then went around turning all the lights on leaving them on all weekend even though they arent needed until monday morning, the same as they are left needlessly burning every other weekend. There are thousands of dollars to be saved here. Chicken feed to the companies that can afford CBD office space, but one hell of a christmas party for the employees.

My office of 400 people turns the lights off every day. Its the way it has been since I started over 4 years ago, before Earth Hour was invented. Unfortunately I still have to pay for my own christmas dinner.

The ride to work day is another stupid hypocrite idea. Who could possibly think that leaving the car at home for one day per year is doing anyone/anything a favour?

I thought i would post what i think and know. Earth hour is obviously a way just to get people thinking about how they can save power. Same with ride to work day, another way to make people think "this aint so bad".

On the actual power generation side it is all hands on deck when earth hour comes around. 2 Years ago i was working in a power station during earth hour. and the plant kept running at its normal capacity for 45 minutes, then started winding down due to the lights being off... then 9pm hit, the draw on power was so insane they had to start up all the emergency generators :P Tru energy told me that it creates more pollution doing than if they just used it as an average night.

I am however a power hog, and i try to remember to turn things off when i dont need them. (unlike the other half who thinks that having the TV on a black screen after turning off the media center is turning the TV off :P (but then again she lets me build my motor on the dining table so i cant be mad at her)

Hi

Stupid idea dreamt up by Prius driving, tofu eating hippies.

I wonder how many people tripped over in the dark and needed emergency services?

If everyone every day turned off stuff that's not needed it would be more benefit.

The government raided the future funds of utilities, water & power so they have no money now to build infrastructure, that's why our power and water bills are through the roof.
