i have a beaut 58 shell and want to put an irs pan under it . I know superbug's are no good but up until what year can i use for this.

For a manual gearbox IRS pan with torsion bar front, your only option is the 1976 Beetle - and not many of them left.

The '68-70 1500 Beetle semi-auto is another option, but you'll have to convert to manual if you don't want semi-auto. The manual Beetles of those years were swing-axle.

Your only other option is to replace the Superbug pan's frame-head with a torsion bar frame head and beam. A good VW workshop could do this for you.

if the IRS is all your after it would be much easier just to do a gearbox swap and do an IRS conversion.... we've done a couple and they work great!

hey greeno72.... consider yourself very lucky, those two responses above have pretty well defined all your options. Not a bad effort for this website.

So, give or take a couple of routine fiddly details, those are your choices.

i would much sooner trust a pair of welded on trailing arm pivots than an entire rewelded frame head

its also a much smaller job to weld in a pair of pivots than the whole front frame head

If you use a 76 pan and the vehicle is registered using the original 76 chassis number.......then your car must comply with the ADR's for 1976.................this includes emissions, and anti burst doors, and a 58 shell does'nt have anti burst door looks !!

Best to use a semi auto pan or convert.
