The end of our Type III?
Green T4 - July 14th, 2003 at 09:06 PM

Bad new for us all, Lilli, our Savannah Beige Type III sedan, has had an engine bay fire at 1615hrs today. SA fire Service extinguished the fire, but not until severe damage had been done.
She was insured with Shannons for $3500, so we'll see what happens, but she looks like a write off. Julia & I are devestated. It was traumatic standing there watching her burn. She was a good VW, and hopefully has gone to VW Heaven, she deserves it!
When I'm up to it, I'll post some pics of the result, but right now I can't bear to look at them.

Robo - July 15th, 2003 at 09:02 AM

First off I spose you are feeling pretty down at the moment, but there could be a bright side to the whole thing, if it is written off, you may be able to buy it back, and start a ground up resto, and she will be better than before!
Rob.......

Sad to hear it. Hope all goes well. If all Shannons policies are the same (and I think they are) you have the right to keep the wreck.

Our sympathies go out to you.
One of my worst nightmares.
:(:(:(

Doug Sweetman - July 15th, 2003 at 02:11 PM

commisserations. Its an absolutely gutting feeling to find out your VW is terminal (hope yours isnt !!!!).

All you can do is have a :beer and look again the next day.

BenettonVW - July 15th, 2003 at 07:48 PM

Correct me if I am wrong, but even if it is a write off, through Shannons, you get salvage rights.. Am I correct? So you have 3500 reasons to restore her?

helbus - July 15th, 2003 at 09:06 PM

If it is Shannons, then yes you will be looked after from my experiences in dealing with them in the past. :D

Green T4 - July 15th, 2003 at 09:09 PM

Tomorrow, Wednesday, I meet with the assessor. I will be guided by what Paul & Ian from the Volksfactory advise.

As can be seen from these horrible pics, the tail lights & reflectors are completely melted, there's no paint on the number plate and there's paint blistering on both rear guards. I couldn't bear to look under to see the amount of damage to the motor etc., plenty of time tomorrow.

As Andy says, if you smell fuel when you're not suppose to , HAVE IT CHECKED OUT! From this experiance, I should have replaced all the vunerable fuel lines when we bought her 2 1/2 years ago.

I lesson learnt too late!

crazyfiggi - July 15th, 2003 at 09:40 PM

Please fix up the damage and get the car back on the road. That car is way to nice to scrap or something like that. I rekon that damage could be repaired.

sikdub - July 15th, 2003 at 11:20 PM

Bugger me, from the pics that i;d seen previously this looked like a bloody excellent original notch. Well i guess all u can do now is make her even better. :thumb
Steven

Green T4 - July 16th, 2003 at 10:10 AM

Yes, I went back yesterday & looked at the pics of her, she sure looked good there. Still, she needed at lot more money spent on her.

NigeType3 - July 16th, 2003 at 12:52 PM

Sorry to hear about your loss. I am verry fanatical (spelling) about fires in mine have 2 extinguishers on board at all times. Helped a lady on the freeway 4 months ago with a falcon their is so much platic in those cars I emptied one and had to use a little of the other. Will be replacing one with a larger one me thinks.

ALso fuel lines are checked regularly and fuel filters are nowwhere near the motor as they seem to be a weak point in the line and the cause of trouble on a good system.

Again soory to here about the loss of another T3 Nige:(

Green T4 - July 16th, 2003 at 01:01 PM

Just got back from the assessor.....it's a write off, and the wreck is mine.

Everything around the motor is melted and now rusted. The rear floor is water logged.

I will be selling her for what I can get. Maybe some one with more money will be able to get her going again. It would suit someone with enough skills to do most/all of the work themselves.
